Full Job Description
OVERVIEW

Vertex is currently accepting applications for an experienced and growth-oriented Technical Project Lead - Urban Development & Infrastructure (Alberta). This role is responsible for expanding Vertex's environmental and biophysical consulting services across Alberta, with a strong focus on the commercial real estate and development sector.

In this leadership role, you will oversee multidisciplinary environmental projects, ensure technical excellence, and guide the growth of Vertex's Urban Development & Infrastructure practice in Alberta. With the support of management, you will have the opportunity to build and mentor a high-performing team, strengthen client relationships, and shape Vertex's expanding presence in the Alberta market.

The successful candidate will be a senior environmental professional with the ability to lead biophysical assessments and environmental permitting projects while supporting the growth and Business development of Stage 1 and Stage 2 Environmental Site Assessments (ESAs) in Alberta. This position combines business development leadership, client management, and technical oversight.

CANDIDATE QUALIFICATIONS

The role reports to the Director - Urban Development & Infrastructure and works closely with environmental, biophysical, and geotechnical teams across Vertex.
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, Geology, Environmental Science, Biology, or a related discipline. A master's degree is considered an asset.
  • 8-12+ years of professional experience in environmental consulting, with demonstrated experience supporting commercial real estate and development projects in Alberta.
  • Lead and manage biophysical focused environmental projects, including:
    • Vegetation, soils, wetlands, wildlife, fisheries and aquatic assessments
    • Regulatory permitting, baseline studies, and impact assessments
    • Support our existing Urban Development Liability Management team with Stage 1 Preliminary Site Investigations (PSIs), Stage 2 Detailed Site Investigations (DSIs), remediation and reclamation projects as required to meet business demands
  • Working knowledge of Stage 1 and Stage 2 ESAs in accordance with:
    • Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act (EPEA)
    • Contaminated Sites Regulation
    • Lender, investor, and transactional requirements
  • Knowledge and experience in BC, Ontario or other regions is considered
  • Proven business development and client relationship management experience, particularly within the commercial real estate, development, and infrastructure sectors
  • Established relationships with developers, engineering firms, municipalities, lenders, and/or regulators in Alberta are strong assets. Established relationships in other regions also considered an asset.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong organizational, leadership, and interpersonal abilities
  • Valid Class 5 driver's license


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Leadership & Personnel Management
  • Provide consistent leadership presence for all staff under your supervision
  • Manage technical outcomes of the team in conjunction with support from the Liability Management team (and other groups as required)
  • Mentor and coach junior and intermediate environmental staff to develop and grow teams and individual skill sets.
  • Evaluate current team needs with Senior Management to meet expected growth and Vertex initiatives
  • Drive continual development of staff to enhance and grow skill sets and support teams in meeting professional development goals
  • Work collaboratively with other Vertex Managers and Project Managers to effectively and safely schedule staff and resources to address client workloads
  • Active stewardship of Vertex and client safety programs is expected as well as supporting the teams in safety excellence for all projects and programs under your care and control


Client Management, Expectations, and Relationships
  • Maintain and build relationships with existing clients and work towards value added opportunities with existing clients
  • Explore, support, and foster new initiatives and opportunities to expand services to new clients
  • Accountable for performance of all UDI being managed and executed in Alberta western Canada
  • Advise clients regarding strategy and approach for project work and delivery of technical documents and communicate progress


Business Development:
  • Build relationships with Developers, Municipalities and Construction Companies
  • Develop a sales strategy to maximize exposure to Urban Development and Infrastructure (UDI) sector
  • Develop and maintain an in-depth knowledge of the UDI market as it relates to Vertex's services
  • Identify opportunities to expand our service offering based on client and market needs
  • Expand Vertex exposure to UDI bids and identify relevant bid opportunities
  • Strategize with Technical team to develop bid responses and quotes
  • Collaborate with and support Regional Leaders to support UDI sector growth at Vertex locations
  • Ensure lessons learned from completed projects/proposals are carried forward to new opportunities


Technical Requirements
  • Working knowledge - understand, remain current, and ability to interpret environmental regulations, guidelines, and standards as required by Vertex and client base
  • Ability to navigate regulatory requirements and provide design solutions, mitigation strategies, risk and opportunities, and anticipated timing to clients
  • Provide technical guidance to clients and staff in your areas of practice and seek advice of internal experts to address technical requirements as needed
  • Review and sign-off of technical reports in your area of practice


Process & Talent Improvement:
  • Seek out talent to supplement commercial operations throughout western Canada
  • Communicate industry information and trends to technical team in support of continuous improvement.
  • Other duties as directed by your direct supervisor or manager


LOCATION
  • This position is based either in Calgary or Sherwood Park
  • Vertex offers a hybrid work structure, combining office and remote work.
  • The role is permanent and full-time (40 hours/week).
