Introduction

Do you like administrative litigation and advising on complex legal issues, but not rainmaking? Do you prefer a work environment with a team atmosphere and good work-life balance? A chance to work for the benefit of the citizens of Wisconsin on a variety of issues - not just property tax valuation, income tax and sales tax issues - but also open records, contracts, unclaimed property, Lottery and alcohol regulation? The Department of Revenue (DOR) Office of General Counsel offers these opportunities. Currently we are filling one Tax Attorney position.

The ideal candidate will enjoy learning and explaining complex concepts to administrative law judges, and will welcome the challenge of litigating appeals from a variety of sources, from individuals to multinational businesses.

This position is headquartered in Madison at the State Revenue Building on Rimrock Road.

Your Role

Represent the Department of Revenue in tax cases before the Tax Appeals Commission and in cases before other administrative agencies and the courts, and in various Ch. 227 proceedings before hearing examiners; provide legal advice and opinions on a variety of legal questions; and review proposed legislation and rules.

Salary Information

The starting pay rate for this position is between $51.56 - $60.35 per hour ($107,245 and $125,528 annually), depending on experience and qualifications, plus excellent benefits. Use this Total Rewards Calculator to see an estimate of the total value of our competitive benefits package!

The classification of this position is an Attorney, which is in Pay Schedule 09, Pay Range 75. Pay will be set in accordance with the State of Wisconsin Compensation Plan in effect at the time of hire. Starting pay for current state employees may vary based on applicable provisions in the Compensation Plan.

Job Details

Background Checks: Due to the nature of this position, final candidates will be subject to criminal background, fingerprint, and tax compliance checks.

I-9 Requirements: Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States (i.e., a citizen or national of the U.S., a lawful permanent resident, an alien authorized to work in the U.S. without sponsorship) at the time of appointment. The Department of Revenue does not sponsor work or student visas and is not an eligible OPT employer for those with F1 visas. DOR participates in E-Verify and will provide the federal government with Form I-9 information for all new employees to confirm authorization to work in the U.S.

Probationary Period: A 12-month probationary period may be required.

Remote/Telework up to 60%: Note:During probation you will have the opportunity to gradually increase to 60% (i.e., working remotely three (3) days per week, and will report to the 2135 Rimrock Road; Madison WI building, two (2) days per week) within 9 months (of your 12-month probation) based on performance and workload needs. Remote work is intended to be performed primarily in the State of Wisconsin and is subject to change based on business needs.

Qualifications

Minimum qualified candidates will have each of the following:

  1. Graduated from an accredited law school.
  2. Possession of a license to practice law in the State of Wisconsin (WI); OR will be licensed to practice law in the state of WI prior to the appointment date, and describes this ability in the application materials (e.g., currently licensed to practice law in another state and have applied for license to practice in WI.).
  3. Tax or civil litigation education or experience.

Well qualified candidates will have experience in two or more of the following, that includes civil litigation experience (in addition to the minimum qualifications):

  1. Civil litigation (required)
  2. Tax law
  3. Real estate law
  4. Corporate or business law
