Position Summary: The Systems Administrator manages, optimizes, and secures the diverse computing infrastructure supporting the Computer Science Department within the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. They will oversee deployment, configuration, and maintenance of departmental Linux and Windows servers, bridging the gap between enterprise IT stability and agile, cutting-edge research infrastructure
Duties and Responsibilities: - Manages and maintains a multi-platform of systems by conducting the systems administration duties that include regular tasks such as file system backups, systems upgrades, software installation, hardware and software monitoring, adding and removing users, and monitoring the systems utilization.
- Develop software applications to streamline the system management and monitoring tasks, as well as other tools for the CS department to support the faculty research and teaching effort and improve the functioning of the Department.
- Enforce cybersecurity best practices, monitor logs, patch systems, and ensure data compliance for research grants.
- Supports Computer Science courses by having the department systems properly configured for class use and installing the applications needed by different courses to provide an adequate environment for the topics offered each semester.
- Performs administrative tasks for the databases (Oracle, MySQL), cloud and virtualization infrastructures, (VMware, Amazon Web Services), and Web Servers (Apache, Php, etc.) used by the department.
- Assists faculty, staff and CS students in resolving computer system related problems.
- Collaborates with University Technology Services to define and continually refine the technically related support required by the department. Also act as department liaison to the outside world, related to the identification and procurement of useful software and hardware tools.
- Supports special events such as: VU Open Houses, Technology fair, Major/Minor fair, VU CS hosted conferences, PC rollout, CS senior projects.
- Stays current in the CS fields by exploring trends and tools used in teaching CS through technical journals, conference proceedings, and attending the CS Colloquiums. Acquires new skills and learns new topics by participating in online webinars and completing tutorials, such as those in LinkedIn's learning platform.
- Performs additional duties and assist with special projects as assigned
Minimum Qualifications: Formal Education- Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or closely related field.
Minimum Work Experience- One year of work experience in the Information Technology field.
- Shows initiative, good communication and collaboration skills.
Specific Job Knowledge- Knowledge of Unix/Linus administration, Oracle administration, basic network and system security.
- A strong programming background.
- Ability to identify and replace defective components in a generic computer equipment.
- Able to follow the warranty and the maintenance guidelines for equipment covered by a vendor maintenance contract.
Preferred Qualifications: - Master's Degree in Computer Science or closely related field.
- Three years of work experience in the Information Technology field.
- Ability to communicate technical concepts to non-technical faculty and students, adaptability to changing research requirements, and strong project management skills.
- A good understanding of MS Active Directory and Sun Network Information Services
- Database administration experience with installing, configuring, and maintaining Oracle and MySQL systems.
- A good understanding of network protocols and different TCP/IP protocol layers.
- Comfortable in troubleshooting and taking apart any computer system or peripheral or network device and fixing or replacing any defective component that is a field replaceable unit (FRU).
Physical Requirements and/or Unusual Work Hours: In order to work with our computer and network devices on a regular basis must be able to comfortably lift up to 30 pounds.

The final salary will be determined with consideration of several factors including the selected candidate's qualifications, department budget availability, market data, and internal equity.
