Full Job Description
The Opportunity: Prospect Schools is seeking a Middle School Data Science and Robotics Teacher to join our Sunset Yards Campus and teach an exciting new course called Global Problem Solving: Data, Robotics, and Design! This position will focus primarily on grades 6-8 with some additional responsibilities in grades K-5. The teacher will design and deliver an innovative, data science-driven curriculum that asks students to gather, analyze, and visualize data, then use design thinking and robotics to build and refine solutions to real-world problems. The careers our students will compete for increasingly reward people who understand how technology works and can use it to solve problems. We believe this course will open opportunities for our students, and funds will be available to supplement the curriculum and augment experiences for students, from tools and platforms to field experiences and competitions. Prospect teachers are grounded in an equity-driven approach following the principles of the International Baccalaureate (IB) curriculum, where instruction emphasizes academic rigor, critical thinking, global mindedness, and inclusive classroom practices. As an educator at Prospect, you will be part of a collaborative and high-performing instructional team and will report directly to a member of the school leadership team. Essential Duties & Responsibilities: Planning and Instruction - Design and deliver culturally responsive, project-based lessons centered on data science, in which students collect, clean, analyze, and visualize data to investigate real-world questions and communicate findings - Teach students to apply the design process and computational thinking, using robotics and physical computing to prototype, build, test, and refine solutions informed by their data - Utilize data, strong content knowledge, and effective pedagogy to plan clear, objective-driven instruction that advances learning for all students - Integrate data science tools (e.g., spreadsheets, Python, and data visualization platforms) alongside coding tools, robotics platforms (e.g., VEX Robotics, LEGO Mindstorms, Arduino), and virtual simulations to deepen student understanding of data, computer science, and engineering concepts - Plan and lead a culminating student showcase at the end of each semester for students and families that reflects the work of that semester. All students must have the opportunity to participate - Collaborate with co-teachers and instructional leaders through coaching, professional development, and, when applicable, advisory groups to support students' academic and social-emotional growth Classroom Environment - Set clear expectations and consistent routines to create a purposeful, warm, and supportive learning environment, including safe use of computing and robotics tools and equipment - Build a culturally sustaining classroom community where all students feel known, safe, valued, and respected by adults and peers, and where students are encouraged to take risks, ask questions, and iterate on their work - Contribute to the larger Sunset Yards and Prospect Schools' community and environment by identifying and leveraging opportunities or events for displaying student work throughout the school building and sharing learnings from the class with the broader Prospect Schools community Staff Collaboration - Embody a "Team First" mindset by collaborating across grade level and content teams, particularly with math and science colleagues, to design interdisciplinary projects that connect data science, robotics, and design with other STEM principles and real-world applications - Demonstrate a commitment to giving and receiving feedback for the purpose of continuous personal growth and betterment of the teaching and learning team - Possibly lead and mentor the school's data science, coding, and robotics extracurricular teams, preparing students for competitions - Work outside of school hours as needed to complete core responsibilities, including planning, preparation for student showcases, family events, and competitions - Perform additional staff duties as assigned that reinforce and support adult collaboration and shared accountability across the K-8 campus Caregiver Partnership - Build strong partnerships with caregivers through consistent communication and regular updates on student progress - Use caregiver feedback to continuously improve instruction and the overall learning experience - Coordinate and facilitate family meetings as needed and attend any/all school wide caregiver events - Perform additional duties as assigned and needed to ensure strong caregiver partnership for all students About You: - You have earned a Bachelor's Degree in Data Science, Statistics, Computer Science, Engineering, Education, or a related field - You have prior teaching experience STEM, computer science, data science, or robotics - You have working knowledge of data science and programming tools (e.g., Python, spreadsheets, and data visualization platforms) and familiarity with robotics platforms (e.g., VEX Robotics, LEGO Mindstorms, Arduino) - You are in the process of earning or have earned a New York Teaching License Certification. Our salaries are set through a lens of equity, and based on an individual's skills, education, and years of experience relevant to the role.
