Full Job Description
Alberta Health Services is currently seeking the on-going services of a licensed physician to Surgical Assist all surgeons and surgical departments in an equitable time allocation, at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital in Medicine Hat, Alberta.

Responsibilities include but not limited to:
  • Reside in and have as primary residence, the community of Medicine Hat.
  • Abide by the AHS Medical Staff Bylaws, the AHS Medical Staff Rules and AHS policies.
  • Obtain and maintain AHS Medical Staff Appointment and appropriate privileges to provide services.
  • Maintain a 1.0 FTE Surgical Assistant practice at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital. Practice is defined as providing commensurate shifts in keeping with other equivalent practice FTEs as assigned by the medical leader on site in the clinical service.
  • FTE Description: This position will be one (1) full time 1.0FTE surgical assistant, the other three (3) surgical assistants are full time 1.0FTEs. Assisting opportunities during elective surgeries may be available. While the volume of surgery performed at Medicine Hat Regional Hospital, may provide assisting work most days, the FTE of 1.0 includes an expectation to work approximately 5 days per week. When there are service reductions due to holidays or other conditions, additional shifts may be available. On-call is expected to be 1:4.
  • Work collaboratively within the appropriate Clinical Departments and provide occasional call support as per AHS's call schedules and expectations for the practices in the Zone or as may otherwise be established or directed by an appropriate Medical Leader for Medicine Hat Regional Hospital (MHRH).
  • Participate in quality improvement programs and initiatives undertaken within the appropriate Zone Clinical Department at the MHRH, including (without limitation) achievement of certain performance indicators as determined by AHS, exercising its discretion reasonably.

Required Qualifications:
  • Have or be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (required with application);
  • Must have recent and relevant experience in all areas of practice required;


Desired Qualifications:
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS);
  • Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS);
  • College of Family Physicians of Canada (CCFP)
  • Preference given to those with recent experience in surgical assisting in a Rural Operating Room/Large Regional Hospital Operating Room
