Location/Department: Hospital - OR/ Same Day SurgeryFT Benefits EligibleJob Summary:Directs & oversees operation of the spectrum of perioperative services within Margaret Mary Health hospital. This position has 24/7 responsibility for the overall care & experience of patients & families in the hospital surgical setting as well as the management & leadership of MMH perioperative team members. Provides daily operational oversight for the same day surgery, OR, PACU & central sterile departments. Promotes collegial relationships between the unit & other departments or disciplines across the organization.
Supervisory Responsibilities: Oversees all OR & SDS staff.
Duties/Responsibilities:- Accountable for & accept responsibility for care given & actions of nursing staff in Same Day Surgery, OR, PACU & Central Sterile
- Directly supervise Assistant Nurse Manager, staff RNs, techs & other staff daily.
- Oversee daily assignments according to staff ability & to maintain proficiency as scrub nurse, circulating nurse or PACU RN.
- Provide 24-hour call schedule for emergency cases done outside established hours of department.
- Assures adequate, complete orientation of new team members using written orientation programs, job description, checklist & clinical practice & demonstration. A completed checklist will be placed in the team member's personnel file at the end of the orientation period.
- Assure that competency of team members is maintained.
- Evaluate & develop staffing plan for unit based on historical data & projected services.
- Assess staffing needs daily, according to case load & acuity & make arrangements for additional staff or deletion of excess personnel.
- Work with various hospital resources & departments in determining educational needs of the staff & scheduling & participating in in-service programs.
- Coordinates case scheduling.
- Abides by established policies regarding surgery scheduling. Communicate with physicians, office staff & other departments regarding changes in scheduling.
- Oversees staffing & call schedules & increases or deletes staff according to daily case load.
- Facilitate progression through daily case load by punctual starting of first case & minimal waiting between cases.
- Display leadership qualities & act as role model for unit personnel.
- Clear understanding of & compliance with hospital policies & procedures. Follows policies & able to interpret them to others.
- Provide instruction & constructive criticism in problem areas.
- Follows appropriate chain of command.
- Support changes designed to benefit the unit & improve patient care.
- Good working relationship with other departments, supervisors & unit personnel.
- Conforms to hospital dress code.
- Maintain proficiency as scrub nurse, circulating nurse and/or or in recovery.
- Willing to work or take a call, as needed, to staff the department during routine hours & for emergencies.
- Assure that needed supplies & equipment are available & located in designated place on unit.
- Assures that supplies are ordered from storeroom as needed.
- Inventory instruments & equipment periodically to maintain adequate supply.
- Make sure that all equipment is properly cleaned, serviced, & available for use. Provide in-service to staff on new equipment, supplies & techniques.
- Encourages appropriate cost containment measures including patient charges for supplies & equipment.
- See that crash cart is checked for supplies & equipment daily.
- Assures that current physicians card file which lists instruments & supplies needed for common surgical procedures is maintained.
- Maintain card file with current description of linen & instrument pack.
- Stays current regarding new policies & hospital information.
- Conduct staff meetings & attend other meetings as appropriate.
- Uses paid time off appropriately & legitimately.
- Stays current on evidenced based operation room standards, emerging best practices, technology and regulatory requirements, through continuing education and professional development.
- Creates and maintains a safe perioperative environment for patients and team members.
- Follows established infection & traffic control policies in OR department.
- Promotes accountability and culture of safety.
- Successfully develops & uses cost, quality & satisfaction measures as outcome criteria to make improvements. Uses appropriate, reliable & valid data as primary basis for making decisions, solving problems & evaluating processes & outcomes. Supports & participates in a team-approach to performance improvement.
- Ensures the department is compliant with all regulatory & accreditation requirements, including federal, state (IDOH), local & the Joint Commission for Perioperative Services.
- Prepare annual surgery budget including volume, FTE, operating & capital budgets. Responsible for monitoring the compliance to established budgets & any corrective action necessary to achieve compliance.
- Maintains department illness report. Performs bi-weekly payroll for department.
- Collaboratively with administration develops annual goals & objectives for the department that are consistent with the Hospital's mission, goals & strategic business plan.
- Responsible for directly supervising department's team members to include hiring, training, disciplinary actions & terminations. Continuously evaluates performance of team members & completes annual written performance evaluations in a timely manner.
- Responsible strategy development to improve the performance, effectiveness & morale of the department team members.
- Fosters personal & professional development of self & team members. Provides opportunities for education & development of self & staff as part of work activities.
- Ensures positive customer relations. As a manager & role model, ensures that team members understand the patients' needs & provide courteous, individualized attention to patients, visitors & fellow team members.
- Continuously monitors department operating systems, policies, procedures & activities & revisions as necessary.
- Attends leadership meetings. Responsible for the chain-of-communication, to communicate the appropriate information to the department team members in a manner that is supportive of the Hospital & administrative decisions.
- The manager is expected to serve on committees, as deemed appropriate to the position & reflect positively on the Hospital in active participation in community activities.
- Willingness to respond, as a manager, to the needs of the Hospital beyond the ordinary work shift.
- Provide communication to SLT, directors, managers, physicians, board members, & staff as indicated.

Education and Experience:- Bachelor's degree in nursing is required; Master's degree in nursing, business, health administration or other related field is preferred.
- Must be licensed as a Registered Nurse in the state of Indiana.
- Minimum of 3 years of clinical leadership experience required, preferably related to surgical & perioperative services in an acute care setting.
- CPR - ACLS/PALS certifications preferred.
- Certification in sterile processing leadership or management preferred.
Physical Requirements: - Work requires moderate physical effort with sitting, standing, walking, climbing, lifting and reaching throughout the day.
- Ability to lift up to 20 pounds for transport of general supplies.
