About the Position: This position is with the National Museum of Health and Medicine (NMHM) within the Defense Health Agency, located at Silver Springs, MD.

Duties

• Serve as the principal technical authority and subject matter expert (SME) on the preservation, accession, deaccession, and conservation of the Museum's extensive historical, anatomical, and pathological collections.
• Ensure absolute compliance with federal laws, Department regulations, and international museum ethics governing the handling, storage, and display of highly sensitive materials, including human remains and medical specimens.
• Administer annual operating budget, coordinate fiscal requirements, defend resource allocations, and secure external funding including grants, cooperative agreements, and public-private partnerships-to expand programs.
• Direct and integrate the Museum's comprehensive research and professional development programs with the strategic priorities of the organization and the Deputy Assistant Director for Science and Technology.
• Oversee the institutional adoption of advanced technologies including high-performance computing, advanced telecommunications, and digital image distribution to modernize collections access across the enterprise.
• Drive long-range, multi-year research initiatives that address systemic problems of significant historic, pathological, and scientific scope, frequently involving complex national and international collaborations.
• Establishs organizational structures, define performance metrics, and delegate operational authority to subordinate supervisors and program leads.
• Formulate performance plans, establishe critical elements, and serve as the rating or reviewing official for subordinate personnel.

• This position is subject to TDY or business travel requirements up to 25% of the time to various locations. This may require travel via privately owned vehicles, commercial transport platforms, and/or military aircraft, ships, and vehicles.
• This position is designated Tier 3, Non-Critical Sensitive, Moderate Risk and requires the incumbent to obtain and maintain a Secret Security Clearance Level as a condition of employment.
• This position requires you to submit a Public Financial Disclosure Report (OGE 278) or a Confidential Financial Disclosure Report (OGE450) upon entry, and annually thereafter.
• One-year supervisory probationary period required. A one-year probationary period is required if the selectee has not previously met this requirement.

Basic Requirement for Supervisory Museum Curator (Medicine):

A. Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in museum work; or in an applicable subject-matter field such as preservation, accession, deaccession, and conservation.

OR

B. Combination of Education and Experience: Courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

OR

C. Experience: Four years of experience that provided knowledge comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of the four year course of study as shown in A above.

In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes managing the acquisition, preservation, cataloging, and physical security of historical and medical collections including human remains; formulating policy recommendations and standard operating procedures for collection management; developing performance standards, evaluating work, and fostering professional development for multidisciplinary professional, technical, and administrative staff. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-14).

Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-14).
