Summary

NIST is seeking a Supervisory Industrial Hygienist to serve as the agency's recognized expert in industrial hygiene, to mitigate hazards in complex environments. This role will provide strategic leadership for group operations, planning and direction.

This notice is issued under direct-hire authority to recruit new talent to occupations for which NIST has a severe shortage of candidates.

  • The Supervisory Industrial Hygienist will possess broad-based expert knowledge of OSHA regulations and Permissible Exposure Limits, American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists Threshold Limit Values and Biological Exposure Indices, consensus standards and industry best practices related to industrial hygiene.
  • Will be responsible for conducting workplace health surveys and determining compliance with occupational health & safety standards.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements

The education must be accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education(external link) at the time the degree was obtained. Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

A bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related science

or

A bachelor's degree in a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene

or

Certification from the Board for Global EHS Credentialing (formerly American Board of Industrial Hygiene(external link) (ABIH)).

Courses in the history or teaching of chemistry are not acceptable.

IN ADDITION TO THE BASIC REQUIREMENTS, ALL APPLICANTS MUST POSSESS:One year (52 weeks) of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 (ZP-III at NIST) level. Specialized experience is defined as:

  1. Experience identifying chemical, physical, and biological health hazards independently.
  2. Experience applying OSHA regulations and industry best practices resulting in lower safety incidence rates.
  3. Possesses experience engaging with stakeholders to influence the quality of safety and health within the work environment


Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
