Statement of Purpose

The Supervising Pharmacist is responsible for the day-to-day management and oversight of the Jones Memorial Hospital Outpatient Pharmacy. This position serves as the pharmacist legally responsible for the practice of pharmacy, ensuring compliance with all applicable federal and New York State laws, regulations, and professional standards.

In addition to providing direct patient care through prescription dispensing, patient counseling, and immunization services, the Supervising Pharmacist leads pharmacy operations, oversees staff performance, maintains regulatory compliance, and partners with providers and organizational leadership to enhance outpatient pharmacy services.

Major Tasks, Duties, and Responsibilities

Pharmacy Operations
  • Direct the daily operations of the outpatient pharmacy to ensure safe, efficient, and compliant pharmacy services.
  • Oversee prescription dispensing, patient counseling, immunization services, and medication management.
  • Maintain a safe environment for patients, staff, and pharmacy operations.
  • Ensure compliance with New York State and federal pharmacy laws, regulations, and accreditation standards.
  • Monitor inventory management, purchasing, quality control, third-party billing, cash controls, and pharmacy security.
  • Support strategic initiatives that expand and enhance outpatient pharmacy services throughout the organization.

Leadership and Personnel Management
  • Recruit, interview, onboard, train, mentor, and supervise pharmacy personnel in collaboration with Human Resources.
  • Establish performance expectations, conduct performance evaluations, and provide ongoing coaching and development.
  • Develop and manage staffing schedules to ensure appropriate pharmacy coverage.
  • Foster a culture of professionalism, accountability, teamwork, and exceptional customer service.

Clinical Pharmacy Practice
  • Provide pharmacist coverage as needed to ensure uninterrupted patient care.
  • Accurately review, verify, and dispense prescriptions in accordance with professional practice standards.
  • Counsel patients regarding medication therapy, safe medication use, and disease management.
  • Support bedside medication delivery and discharge prescription services to improve transitions of care.
  • Oversee outpatient immunization services and ensure compliance with current clinical guidelines.
  • Collaborate with physicians, advanced practice providers, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to optimize medication therapy and patient outcomes.

Regulatory Compliance
  • Ensure full compliance with all controlled substance regulations and applicable state and federal pharmacy laws.
  • Maintain systems that safeguard controlled substances and prevent diversion, including perpetual inventory management and routine auditing.
  • Maintain all required pharmacy records, documentation, policies, and quality assurance activities.

Professional Responsibilities
  • Maintain professional competency through continuing education and regulatory requirements.
  • Promote a culture of patient safety, quality improvement, and continuous learning.
  • Demonstrate professionalism, integrity, ethical conduct, and exceptional customer service in all interactions.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Pharmacy Services.

Education and Licensure
  • Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) or Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy from an accredited School of Pharmacy
  • Current New York State Pharmacist license in good standing

Experience and Qualifications
  • Minimum of two (2) years of retail or outpatient pharmacy experience required
  • Previous supervisory or pharmacy leadership experience preferred
  • Strong knowledge of New York State and federal pharmacy regulations, including controlled substance requirements
  • Experience with inventory management, third-party billing, and pharmacy operations
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated ability to lead teams, manage multiple priorities, and drive operational excellence
