POSITION PURPOSE

This position is responsible for planning, directing, and coordinating all Primary Operations activities, including Electric Arc Furnace (EAF), Ladle Metallurgy Furnace (LMF), Vacuum Tank Degasser (VTD), Continuous Casting, Refractories, and related production support functions. The Superintendent will ensure the safe, reliable, and cost-effective operation of the department while driving continuous improvement initiatives to support production, quality, environmental, and business objectives.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
• Provide strong leadership to managers, supervisors, and hourly employees across all Primary Operations areas, including melting, refining, casting, refractories, and production support functions.
• Develop and lead a strong safety culture by ensuring compliance with all safety, environmental, regulatory, and company requirements while proactively identifying and eliminating hazards.
• Direct and coordinate Primary Operations activities to achieve production, quality, reliability, cost, and customer service objectives.
• Lead, coach, and develop managers, supervisors, and employees through performance management, employee development, engagement, and succession planning initiatives.
• Ensure attainment of production schedules and business objectives while maintaining product quality standards and operational efficiency.
• Drive continuous improvement initiatives focused on safety, productivity, yield, process stability, quality, reliability, and cost optimization.
• Lead troubleshooting efforts, root cause analysis, and corrective actions to resolve operational, process, quality, and equipment performance issues.
• Partner with Maintenance, Engineering, Quality, Scheduling, Procurement, Safety, Environmental, and Human Resources teams to improve overall plant performance.
• Support and coordinate major maintenance outages, capital projects, commissioning activities, and operational improvement initiatives.
• Develop and manage departmental budgets, staffing plans, contractor resources, and operating expenditures.
• Develop, monitor, and communicate departmental goals and key performance indicators (KPIs) aligned with plant and corporate objectives.
• Assist in the development and execution of strategic plans, long-term operational improvements, and asset management initiatives that support overall business performance.

QUALIFICATIONS
Competencies and Experience
Required:
• Minimum 10 years of experience in heavy industrial manufacturing, steelmaking, primary operations, or a comparable production environment.
• Minimum 5 years of progressive leadership experience in operations, production, maintenance, engineering, or related manufacturing functions.
• Demonstrated ability to lead managers, supervisors, hourly employees, contractors, and cross-functional teams.
• Strong knowledge of steelmaking processes, production planning, scheduling, process control, quality systems, reliability improvement, and cost management.
• Demonstrated experience in identifying and resolving operational issues through structured problem-solving and root cause analysis.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and business or operational management systems.
• Strong leadership, communication, organizational, coaching, and decision-making skills.
• Ability to work under pressure, manage competing priorities, and drive operational results in a dynamic manufacturing environment.

Preferred:
• 15+ years of steelmaking or primary operations experience.
• Experience with Electric Arc Furnace (EAF), Ladle Metallurgy Furnace (LMF/LRF), Vacuum Tank Degasser (VTD), Continuous Casting, Refractories, Scrap Operations, and Ladle Metallurgy practices.
• Experience supporting major outages, capital projects, equipment commissioning, and process improvement initiatives.
• Six Sigma, Lean Manufacturing, Root Cause Analysis, or Continuous Improvement training.

Education
Required:
• Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Management, Engineering, Metallurgy, Operations Management, or related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred:
• Bachelor's degree in Metallurgical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or related technical discipline.
• Master's degree in Engineering, Business Administration, Management, or related field.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES / DIRECT REPORTS
This position has overall leadership responsibility for Primary Operations, including salaried and hourly personnel.
Direct reports may include:

Total team size dependent on facility structure; typically includes multiple salaried leaders and hourly crews.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The employee will frequently be required to:
• This position operates in an office environment. The role routinely uses standard office equipment. The ability to walk, bend, kneel or stand, use of hands to finger, hold and handle.
• This position will often require work in the industrial environment with exposure to heat/cold, walking, climbing stairs/ladders, noise and wearing safety equipment/clothing for protection from hazards.

The employee will occasionally be required to:
• Drive or travel by airplane
• Lift, push, or carry materials up to 50 pounds
• Work at heights or in confined spaces
• Work around energized electrical equipment and high voltage systems
• Use of required PPE and safety equipment at all times

The position requires the following vision and hearing capabilities:
• Talking person to person, on the phone, and/or in group settings
• Hearing in person, on the phone, and/or in group settings
• Vision at near, mid, and far range

POSITION TYPE - WORK HOURS - TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS
• Position is full time, exempt
• Day shift, Monday through Friday, with additional hours as required for outages, emergencies, and project execution
• Travel for this position is expected to be less than 10% of time in the field or at other SSAB locations
