Full Job Description
We have an opening for a **Superblock Electrical Engineer** to play a key role in advancing next-generation weapons technologies in direct support of the nation's strategic deterrent. In this position, you will help mature critical technologies driving the design, installation, and integration of advanced electrical and pulsed power systems within nuclear facilities, with a focus on ensuring safe, reliable, maintainable, and code-compliant operation throughout the facility lifecycle. You will join our Superblock Capabilities team working on complex, mission-critical projects at the intersection of facility engineering and nuclear weapons program needs. Your work will emphasize the design and integration of **power conditioning equipment, pulse power systems and modulators, high-voltage and high-power electronics, switching power supplies, and associated specialized instrumentation, control, and transmission line systems**. You will also support systems and applications involving **electron beam generation, emission current and vapor rate control feedback, beam transport, vacuum heaters, and high-voltage ion attraction**. This role includes developing design packages, engineering calculations, and technical documentation to support the design, construction, startup, commissioning, acceptance testing, turnover to operations, and long-term sustainment of complex electrical systems in nuclear facilities. You will have the opportunity to contribute throughout the project lifecycle, from requirements development and conceptual design through detailed engineering, installation, testing, commissioning, and operational support, seeing your engineering solutions implemented in complex, mission-critical nuclear facility environments. This position is in the Defense Technologies Engineering Division (DTED) within the Engineering Directorate. This position will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities, outlined below, will be assigned if hired at the higher level. This position may offer a hybrid schedule, which includes the flexibility to work from home up to one day per week, after a probationary period. The specifics of the hybrid schedule, including the exact number of days required in the office and virtual work options, may vary based on the needs of the team and the organization. You will - Develop electrical design packages, including one-line diagrams, panel schedules, wiring diagrams, conduit and raceway layouts, equipment layouts, and construction specifications for power conditioning, pulsed power, high-voltage, and high-power electronic systems. - Work with program and facility stakeholders to define requirements, identify equipment power needs, and translate them into conceptual and detailed electrical designs. - Perform engineering analyses and calculations, including load studies, voltage drop, short-circuit, protective device coordination, grounding, and insulation coordination. - Support the design and integration of specialized systems for electron beam applications, beam transport, vacuum heater power, and high-voltage ion attraction systems. - Coordinate with the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) and facility engineering staff to ensure compliance with Laboratory requirements, National Electrical Code (NEC), and other applicable codes and standards. - Support detailed design activities, including drawings, specifications, bills of material, and engineering documentation, while coordinating with fabrication, procurement, and installation teams. - Review vendor and fabrication submittals, including data sheets, manufacturer documentation, factory acceptance test (FAT) documentation, and technical calculations, for compliance with project requirements. - Participate in field walkdowns, construction, installation, testing, startup, and commissioning to verify systems are installed and integrated correctly. - Provide engineering support for commissioning and programmatic testing by ensuring required power, instrumentation, communication, and feedback interfaces are in place. - Support electrical engineering efforts across planning, design, procurement, construction, testing, commissioning, turnover, and operational support. - Perform other duties as assigned. **Qualifications** - Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. - Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a closely related technical field, or equivalent combination of education and/or experience. - Minimum of 2 years of electrical engineering experience in a commercial, industrial, laboratory, or similar environment. - Working knowledge of electrical drawings, including one-line diagrams, panel schedules, elementary diagrams, wiring diagrams, and equipment connection details. - Familiarity with NEC principles and their application to electrical design and equipment integration. - Experience supporting electrical testing activities such as checkout, startup, acceptance testing, or commissioning. - Experience using electrical engineering software and design tools such as AutoCAD, SKM Power*Tools, ETAP, or similar tools. - Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to work with engineering teams and prepare clear technical documentation. - Exposure to power conditioning equipment, pulsed power systems, high-voltage systems, high-power electronics, switching power supplies, instrumentation is preferred. **Additional qualifications at the SES.3 level** - Advanced knowledge of facility power distribution and mission-critical electrical systems, including normal, standby, emergency, UPS, and critical power systems. - Advanced experience defining electrical project scope in industrial facilities, including design criteria, calculations, specifications, drawings, work instructions, and construction documentation. - Advanced knowledge of applicable electrical and nuclear codes and standards, including NFPA 70, NFPA 70E, NFPA 110, IEEE, UL, and DOE or nuclear safety requirements. - Strong communication skills with the ability to prepare, present, and explain technical information to management, reviewers, and stakeholders. - Ability to manage multiple engineering projects on budget and schedule while balancing competing priorities. - Strong background in high-voltage pulsed power systems, power electronics, instrumentation and controls, and beam-related electrical applications. **Qualifications We Desire** - EIT certification or PE registration in Electrical Engineering preferred. - Experience supporting electrical design or integration for power conditioning, pulsed power, high-voltage, or high-power electronic systems. - Experience in industrial, laboratory, institutional, DOE, or nuclear environments preferred. - Familiarity with nuclear safety requirements, configuration management, NQA-1 quality assurance processes. - Familiarity with hazardous location design, standby and emergency power systems, power system studies, or commissioning is a plus. - Experience using SKM Power*Tools, ETAP, AutoCAD, or similar software. - Exposure to electron beam systems, power electronics, instrumentation and controls, or related high-voltage applications preferred. **Pay Range** $146,340 - $222,564 Annually $146,340 - $185,544 Annually for SES.2 Level $175,530 - $222,564 Annually for SES.3 Level This is the lowest to highest salary in good faith we would pay for this role at the time of this posting. Pay will not be below any applicable local minimum wage.
