Full Job Description
Structural engineering at ISL means taking a project from a napkin sketch through tender and into construction, working across timber, concrete, masonry and steel on buildings that shape the communities around Calgary and beyond.

You will lead technical design, coordinate with architects, civil and mechanical teams, and mentor the next generation of engineers, all while backed by ISL's five sectors of multidisciplinary expertise.

Structural Engineer

About the Role

Reporting into the Technical Lead, Buildings, your primary responsibilities will include:
• Preparing detailed structural engineering designs from concept, through tender to construction for a wide variety of projects including commercial, recreational, municipal, industrial, and residential buildings, in various structural materials (mass timber, light-frame wood, concrete, masonry and steel)
• Assembling and reviewing structural deliverables in collaboration with other team members
• Reviewing and coordinating deliverables with other project team members including architectural, civil, landscape, process, mechanical, electrical, contractors and suppliers as each project requires
• Participating in project meetings
• Completing assessments and preparing reports for various buildings and structures
• Supporting construction administration objectives and performing field reviews, including travel to rural locations
• Mentoring junior engineers and reviewing their work
• Observing and maintaining quality assurance practices and documentation standards on all projects
• Actively participating in continuous improvement initiatives
• Being a lifelong learner and staying current on industry trends and emerging technologies
• Collaborating with, advising, and assisting team members in other groups and offices

Location:

ISL is proudly located in over 16 offices across Western Canada. This position will be located in:
  • Calgary
  • Open to relocating someone to Calgary

Your resume must display:
  • Registered as a P.Eng. with 7+ years of relevant work experience
  • Previous design and construction experience in building structural systems within the building construction industry
  • Demonstrated experience working collaboratively with a variety of clients and consultant team members to deliver projects successfully
  • Ability to use critical thinking to evaluate which multidisciplinary team member should be contacted for project efficiency
  • Knowledge and application of structural theory, the National Building Code of Canada, and Canadian Design Standards. Preferred knowledge as it would apply to wood, steel, and reinforced concrete
  • Working knowledge of Bluebeam, Microsoft Word, and Excel.
  • Familiarity with structural analysis software (e.g., SAP2000, SAFE, S-Frame, ETABS, WoodWorks Sizer or other similar)

Assets:
  • Preferred experience in a consulting engineering environment
  • A graduate degree in structural engineering would be considered an asset
  • Experience managing or mentoring other engineers

Depending on your experience level, the salary range (based on a 40-hour work week) is:

$90,000 - $130,000
