SALARY RANGE: 116,708.80 - 180,897.60 YEARLY
General Summary:The Sterile Processing Director is responsible for the strategic leadership, management, and operational oversight of the Sterile Processing Department (SPD). This role ensures the safe, efficient, and compliant reprocessing of surgical instruments and medical devices in accordance with regulatory standards, manufacturer guidelines, and best practices. The Director collaborates closely with Surgical Services, Infection Prevention, and other clinical departments to support high-quality patient care.
Responsibilities:1. Leadership & Management: Provide overall leadership and direction for Sterile Processing operations across the organization. Recruit, hire, train, and evaluate SPD staff including supervisors and technicians. Develop and maintain staffing models to ensure adequate coverage for all shifts. Foster a culture of accountability, teamwork, and continuous improvement.
2. Operational Oversight: Oversee all decontamination, assembly, sterilization, and distribution processes. Ensure timely availability of sterile supplies and instrumentation to support surgical and procedural areas. Monitor case cart preparation, instrument tracking systems, and workflow efficiency. Collaborate with OR leadership to align priorities and case volume demands.
3. Quality & Compliance: Ensure compliance with regulatory and accreditation standards (e.g., Joint Commission, AAMI, AORN, CDC, OSHA). Establish and maintain quality assurance/performance improvement (QAPI) programs. Monitor sterilization indicators, biological testing, and documentation accuracy. Lead audits, inspections, and corrective action plans.
4. Infection Prevention & Safety: Partner with Infection Prevention to minimize healthcare-associated infections (HAIs). Ensure adherence to infection control standards and best practices. Promote safe handling of hazardous materials and sharps.
5. Financial & Resource Management: Develop and manage departmental budgets, including labor, equipment, and supplies. Analyze productivity metrics and identify cost-saving opportunities. Oversee inventory management and vendor relationships. Participate in capital planning for equipment and technology upgrades.
6. Education & Training: Ensure all staff maintain required certifications and competencies. Provide ongoing education related to new technology, equipment, and regulatory updates. Support professional development and career advancement.
7. Strategic Planning: Develop long-term strategies to enhance SPD operations and service delivery. Implement new technologies (e.g., instrument tracking systems, automation). Participate in organizational initiatives and performance improvement projects.
8. All other duties as assigned within the scope and range of job responsibilities.
Required Education, Credential(s) and Experience:- Education: Bachelor Degree
; Related field
; - Credential(s): CRCST within 12 months of hire, if not already obtained
; - Experience: Required: 5 years' progressive management / leadership experience in healthcare or equivalent. Familiarity with concepts of safe handling of contaminated materials and devices, as well as with manual and automated cleaning/disinfectant processes.
Preferred: 10 years' progressive management / leadership experience as a Sterile Processing Manager in a multi-divisional hospital system/ Experience working with High Reliability principles and processes.
