Our transportation practice is seeking a Structural Engineer (Bridges) to join our Kansas City, Missouri office. This opportunity may also be available in our other offices for the right candidate.

Our Burns & McDonnell bridge practice is expanding in the Midwest region and is seeking qualified candidates to support our clients on meaningful and challenging projects. This role will serve our bridge department, providing an opportunity to build your career as part of our team, recognized as a regional leader in bridge services. Primary focus would be on structural designs including structural steel, reinforced concrete, prestressed concrete, and foundations of all types. Clients include state DOTs, municipalities, railroads, transit agencies, port authorities and private industrial entities.

Our ideal candidate is someone with a highly technical background and excellent communication skills who can execute engineering tasks independently and as an integral part of our team.

Responsibilities
  • Work with a multi-discipline team of engineers and technicians on the analysis, design, and plan production for structural projects and primarily bridge projects.
  • Responsible for design quality and accuracy of engineering plans within desired budget and scope. Responsible for QA/QC process adherence.
  • Achieve stated targets and standards for financial performance.
  • Perform a variety of structural bridge design tasks including geometrics and layout, steel and concrete superstructures, foundations of all types, bridge hydraulics, bridge inspection and load rating, construction engineering, specifications and cost estimates.
  • Serve as a task lead for structural bridge design tasks and quality reviews.
  • Makes independent decisions on engineering problems and selects appropriate structural solutions that are cost effective and constructible.
  • Apply theoretical knowledge and technical experience to tackle uncommon and complex structural configurations.
  • Participate in project team meetings and communicate effectively with project team members.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering, with an emphasis in structural engineering. Master's degree with an emphasis in structural engineering strongly preferred.
  • Minimum of 3 years related experience, and up to 20 years, in a variety of engineering projects. Position will be assigned based on experience level and duration.
  • The candidate must be a licensed Professional Engineer (PE) or on track to take the PE exam. Licensed Structural Engineer (SE) or on track to take the SE exam is desirable.
  • Bridge inspection certification desirable.
  • Candidate must possess advanced technical proficiency, critical thinking skills, and problem-solving ability.
  • Experience with the design of different bridge components including superstructures, substructures and foundations.
  • Experience executing engineering designs with aid of software such as OpenBridge, MDX, RISA, MIDAS or equivalent.
  • Knowledge of CADD software including Bentley MicroStation.
