About the RoleInternal audit is being asked to do more with less. According to the IIA's 2026 North American Pulse of Internal Audit, the share of functions reporting budget cuts rose from 11% to 19% in a single year, while the share reporting increases fell from 34% to 23%, and staff cuts climbed from 11% to 18%. The audit universe keeps growing. The team does not.
