Full Job Description
Developer learning has changed. It has shifted toward just-in-time learning via generative AI, and away from owned web properties. The Staff Engineering Technical Writer will work alongside the existing customer success and PMM teams to build an education strategy that leverages these industry changes to support awareness and adoption of 1Password's developer tools, by creating AI and generative-search-optimized content, tutorials, technical blogs, and other technical assets. This role will report to the Director of Developer Relations. You will work alongside the current technical writing team to help 1Password create content that AI surfaces, and that addresses real human concerns and technical education needs, and disseminate that content across the organization. How we're using AI today Our Engineering, Product, and Design teams are thoughtfully integrating AI across the full software and product development lifecycle to move faster without sacrificing quality or security. In practice, that looks like engineers using AI-assisted coding tools to accelerate reviews and catch bugs earlier, product managers synthesizing user research at scale, and designers rapidly prototyping and iterating with AI-generated mockups. We approach AI the same way we approach security: with clear principles, human accountability at every consequential decision point, and rigorous evaluation before anything ships to customers. This is a remote opportunity within Canada and the US. What we're looking for: Experience: 7+ years of technical content experience delivering documentation, tutorials, and technical marketing materials for DevOps tools, CLIs, or programming languages. User perspective: A strong user perspective, informed by product testing and usage, that helps identify content needs and product rough edges. Data driven choices: Experience using web metrics data to optimize documentation, evaluate content strategy, identify content gaps, drive traffic, and generate engagement. Cross functional collaboration: Experience collaborating with technical product marketing, social teams, customer support, SMEs, Comms, and brand to produce an externally coherent picture of a product's technical capabilities and use cases. Platform Collaboration: Proven collaborations with the teams building the content platform to improve performance, usability, searchability, and AI compatibility. Enablement: Experience enabling engineering and product teams to create strong documentation and other types of technical content using training, tools, standards, automation. What you can expect: Architect content navigation structures and content sets that support users of all experience levels with specific technical problems they are trying to solve. Author content by testing workflows directly in context and describing the steps that enable those workflows, converting existing content for new audiences, and by working with SMEs or other stakeholders. Engage with the community and internal stakeholders to improve content across 1Password's content channels and fill gaps through authoring or curation. Optimize content and web for AI discoverability in collaboration with the owners of the web platform. Help users find answers in the places they naturally look, via Google agent mode, AI assisted IDEs, and other interfaces. Enable people from across the 1Password community to create great content using templates, skills, toolkits, style guides, training, and feedback. Raise the bar for written content across the organization. Socialize content across marketing, customer success, social, and field teams to get it the broadest possible reach and impact. USA-based roles only: The annual base salary for this role is between $122,000 USD and $177,000 USD, plus immediate participation in 1Password's benefits program (health, dental, 401k and many others), utilization of our generous paid time off, an equity grant and, where applicable, participation in our incentive programs. Canada-based roles only: The annual base salary for this role is between $102,000 CAD and $148,000 CAD, plus immediate participation in 1Password's generous benefits program (health, dental, RRSP and many others), utilization of our generous paid time off, an equity grant and, where applicable, participation in our incentive programs. At 1Password, we approach each individual's compensation with a promise of fair market value and internal equity commensurate with experience and specific skill set. This posting is for an existing vacancy. What we offer We believe in working hard, and rewarding that hard work through our benefits. While not an exhaustive list, here is a glance at what we currently offer: Health and wellbeing Maternity and parental leave top-up programs Competitive health benefits Generous PTO policy Growth and future RSU program for most employees Retirement matching program Free 1Password account Community Paid volunteer days Peer-to-peer recognition through Bonusly Remote-first work environment *Some roles in our GTM team are currently being hired for in-person hybrid work in Toronto and Austin.
