Full Job Description
The Opportunity

Team GSD is Fullscript's internal AI and automation team. We build the shared infrastructure, integrations, and internal tools that help Fullscripters improve how work gets done across the company. We're looking for a Staff Developer to help shape and build the technical foundation behind that work.

Our work starts with real business problems. We use AI and modern automation to reduce manual effort, connect fragmented workflows, and give teams practical tools they can rely on in production. We care about speed, but we also care about building systems that are secure, observable, maintainable, and able to scale.

This is a deeply hands-on individual contributor role focused on internal products and infrastructure rather than Fullscript's customer-facing platform. You will design and operate production systems that connect large language models with company data, tools, and workflows through technologies such as MCP, agentic systems, model gateways, and workflow orchestration.

You will work with a high degree of autonomy. Direction and business context will come from the GSD team and targeted conversations with business owners, but you will be expected to define the technical path, challenge assumptions, make pragmatic trade-offs, and carry meaningful work from an ambiguous problem through production. This is not a ticket-driven role.

At the Staff level, your impact will extend beyond the systems you personally build. You will help determine what GSD should tackle next, influence architectural decisions, act as a thought partner to other experienced developers, and raise the team's technical capability through reviews, pairing, documentation, office hours, and engineering discussions.

This is how we like building software: builders.fullscript.com. If you share our values, we'd be excited to talk with you.

What you'll do

  • Architect and build production-grade internal AI tools and shared platform capabilities used by teams across Fullscript.
  • Lead the technical design and delivery of complex AI integrations, including MCP-based tool use, agentic workflows, context layers, model gateways, and workflow automation.
  • Independently take ambiguous business problems from technical discovery and architecture through implementation, deployment, measurement, and ongoing operation.
  • Develop and maintain the infrastructure that connects approved models with Fullscript's internal systems, data, APIs, and user workflows.
  • Own the reliability, scalability, observability, and security of production AI systems, including model routing, evaluation, access control, and the responsible handling of sensitive data.
  • Build internal experiences that are useful to people across the business, contributing across backend services, infrastructure, and user-facing interfaces where the problem requires it.
  • Work with GSD teammates, engineers, and business owners to understand high-value workflows and translate them into maintainable technical solutions without becoming dependent on heavy stakeholder oversight.
  • Evaluate emerging AI models, frameworks, and patterns through practical experimentation, then make clear recommendations about what Fullscript should adopt, adapt, or avoid.
  • Shape GSD's technical roadmap by identifying reusable platform opportunities, challenging architectural assumptions, and connecting engineering investments to measurable business impact.
  • Act as a force multiplier through thoughtful code reviews, pairing, technical guidance, documentation, office hours, and active participation in the broader engineering community.

What you bring to the table
  • 8+ years of professional software development experience, including demonstrated impact as a technical leader on complex production systems.
  • Hands-on experience building and operating AI-enabled applications in production, including strong familiarity with MCP or comparable tool-use protocols, agents, context management, and LLM integrations.
  • A track record of building internal tools, developer platforms, or enterprise systems that were adopted by real users and produced measurable operational impact.
  • Deep backend engineering expertise in Ruby, Python, or a comparable language, along with the ability to learn new languages and frameworks as the problem requires.
  • Strong systems-design fundamentals, including APIs, integrations, distributed systems, data flows, authentication, authorization, and pragmatic architectural trade-offs.
  • Practical cloud and DevOps experience operating reliable systems in AWS or a comparable environment, including CI/CD, containers, serverless infrastructure, observability, and infrastructure as code.
  • The ability to work independently through ambiguity, define your own path forward, and drive substantial initiatives to completion without waiting for detailed requirements or a queue of tickets.
  • Clear, credible communication and Staff-level influence, with the ability to explain decisions, challenge other experienced engineers constructively, share knowledge, and connect technical work to business outcomes.

Bonus if you have
  • Experience with React, TypeScript, or GraphQL and the ability to contribute to full-stack internal applications.
  • Experience with n8n, Temporal, or another workflow orchestration platform.
  • Familiarity with LLM evaluation and observability platforms such as Langfuse.
  • Experience with GitLab CI/CD, Kubernetes, Cloudflare Workers, or similar infrastructure and deployment tooling.
  • Experience building technology in healthcare or another regulated environment governed by standards such as HIPAA or SOC 2.

Technical Envionrment
  • Languages and frameworks: Ruby, React, TypeScript, Python, GraphQL, and SQL
  • AI and LLM: Multiple LLM providers, AWS Bedrock, AI gateway, MCP, agentic workflows, and AI evaluation and observability tooling
  • Infrastructure: AWS, EKS/Kubernetes, GitLab CI/CD, Cloudflare, serverless services, and infrastructure as code
  • Data: Snowflake and PostgreSQL
  • Observability: Langfuse, Sentry, and Coralogix

What we can offer you
  • Remote-first flexibility to work where you work best, with Ottawa, Toronto, or Calgary preferred for this role.
  • Flexible PTO and competitive pay, because work-life balance matters
  • RRSP/401k match and competitive compensation packages to invest in your future
  • Premium benefits package with customizable coverage, paramedical services, and an HSA.
  • Fullscript discounts to save on high-quality wellness products
  • Continuous learning opportunities to grow your skills and career
