What you'll do...

Role summary:
At Walmart, data is at the heart of how we serve hundreds of millions of customers every week. As a Staff Data Engineer, you'll be a technical leader shaping the data platforms and pipelines that power [Customer Growth, membership, and analytics] across the enterprise. You'll operate at petabyte scale, set the technical direction for a portfolio of data products, and multiply the impact of engineers and data scientists across multiple teams - driving architecture, quality, and long-term platform health rather than individual features.

What you'll do:

Data Platform Engineering
  • Own architecture for large-scale streaming data.
  • Design, build, and maintain scalable data pipelines supporting batch and real-time workloads.
  • Develop robust ingestion, transformation, and orchestration frameworks for structured and unstructured data.
  • Ensure data quality, reliability, observability, and governance.
  • Build self-service platform capabilities that improve developer productivity.
  • Improve platform reliability through observability, alerting, and automated remediation.

Analytics & AI Enablement
  • Support data scientists, analysts, and product teams by providing scalable infrastructure and trusted data assets.
  • Partner with AI and product teams to operationalize machine learning and generative AI solutions.

Engineering Excellence
  • Optimize platform performance, scalability, and cost efficiency.
  • Mentor engineers and promote engineering standards across teams.


What you'll bring:
  • Extensive experience in data engineering, including data integration, transformation, and pipeline development using ETL and streaming techniques.
  • Understanding of data governance, quality standards, and regulatory requirements to ensure compliance and data integrity.
  • 4+ years of experience in Data Engineering, Platform Engineering, Software Engineering, or related disciplines.
  • Strong programming skills in Python, Java, Scala, or similar languages.
  • Hands-on experience or strong familiarity with data platforms and technologies such as Airflow, GCP, BigQuery, Hive, and Presto.
  • Experience building and maintaining large-scale data pipelines.
  • Experience with distributed data processing frameworks such as Spark, Flink, or Beam.
  • Strong understanding of data modeling, storage systems, and distributed architectures.
  • Experience implementing CI/CD pipelines and infrastructure automation.

Sunnyvale, California US-11349: The annual salary range for this position is $143,000.00 - $286,000.00

Bentonville, Arkansas US-10735: The annual salary range for this position is $110,000.00 - $220,000.00

Additional compensation includes annual or quarterly performance bonuses.
