Full Job Description
Office of the General Counsel

Miccosukee Tribe of Indians of Florida

Job Type: Full-Time, 100% In-Person

Location: Miccosukee Administration Building, Central Everglades, approximately 18 miles west of the Miccosukee Casino.

Salary: $85,000-$120,000 annually, commensurate with experience, qualifications, and overall fit for the position.

Position Summary

The Office of the General Counsel is seeking a thoughtful, practical, and collaborative Staff Attorney to join our team.

Practicing law for a sovereign Tribal Nation is unlike practicing law anywhere else. Our attorneys provide legal and practical advice to Tribal leadership, departments, enterprises, and members of the Miccosukee community. The work is varied, meaningful, and intellectually challenging, offering the opportunity to make a lasting impact on Tribal government and the community it serves.

This is not a traditional law firm position. There are no billable hours, no expectation that you'll develop clients, and no pressure to build your own practice. While occasional evening or weekend work may be necessary to meet important deadlines or support Tribal business, this is generally a predictable Monday through Friday position.

The Staff Attorney reports to the General Counsel and works collaboratively with the Legal Department to provide practical, solution-oriented legal services.

We are looking for someone who enjoys learning, solving problems, and helping clients accomplish their goals. Our role is not simply to identify legal risk-we work to find practical ways to achieve the Tribe's goals while thoughtfully protecting its interests.

Prior Tribal law experience is welcome but not required. We are looking for someone with sound judgment, intellectual curiosity, humility, and a genuine interest in learning about Tribal sovereignty, Tribal government, and the unique legal and cultural environment in which we serve.

Essential Responsibilities

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Provide legal advice and support to Tribal leadership, departments, and enterprises.
  • Draft, review, negotiate, and revise contracts, agreements, policies, resolutions, correspondence, and other legal documents.
  • Conduct legal research and provide practical, solution-oriented legal analysis.
  • Build strong working relationships with Tribal departments and communicate complex legal issues in a practical, understandable manner.
  • Support a wide variety of governmental, business, employment, procurement, regulatory, governance, and litigation matters.
  • Coordinate with outside counsel, consultants, government agencies, and other professionals.
  • Assist in improving departmental processes, templates, and resources.
  • Perform other duties and special projects as assigned.

Qualifications

Success in this role requires someone who:
  • Exercises sound judgment and approaches problems with a practical mindset.
  • Communicates clearly and builds strong professional relationships.
  • Enjoys learning and adapts well to unfamiliar legal issues.
  • Takes ownership while valuing collaboration and teamwork.
  • Serves the Tribe with professionalism, integrity, and respect.

Preferred qualifications include:
  • Approximately 2-5 years of legal experience, preferably in contracts, business transactions, governmental operations, employment, procurement, litigation support, administrative law, regulatory matters, or a related practice area.
  • Licensed to practice law in Florida, or willing to obtain Florida Bar admission within one year.
  • Strong analytical, writing, organizational, and communication skills.

If you're looking for a career that offers variety, intellectual growth, meaningful responsibility, and the opportunity to make a genuine difference, we'd love to hear from you.
