About the Role

The Senior Specialist Project Controls is responsible for developing, managing, and optimizing project budgets for the Nevada Projects portfolio. This role ensures alignment between planned budgets and actual expenditures, supports timely decision-making, and gives project teams real-time visibility into financial performance. Working closely with project managers, engineers, procurement, finance, and contractors, the Specialist tracks costs, forecasts spend, mitigates cost risks, and communicates financial insights that help keep multi-million-dollar projects on schedule and within budget.

Key Responsibilities

Budget Development & Financial Planning
  • Develop and maintain detailed project budgets, cash-flow plans, contingencies, and reconciliations aligned with project milestones.
  • Prepare financial forecasts, scenario analyses, and spend projections to support decision-making during studies, construction, and ramp-up phases.
  • Align budget planning with annual and multi-year capital spend targets (e.g., $165M in 2026 and significantly increasing in 2027).


Cost Tracking & Performance Monitoring
  • Monitor actual spend versus budget, identify variances, and recommend corrective actions.
  • Ensure timely, accurate reporting of expenditures across engineering, operations, procurement, and site teams.
  • Review and validate invoices, POs, contracts, and cost coding for proper accounting alignment.
  • Maintain integrated cost-control systems and ensure data accuracy between SAP, TM1, Hyperion, and project management tools.


Reporting & Stakeholder Communication
  • Produce regular cost performance dashboards, variance reports, and executive-level summaries.
  • Support financial sections of conceptual, pre-feasibility, and feasibility studies.
  • Facilitate budget review meetings and workshops to help project teams understand cost drivers and spending patterns.


Risk Management & Continuous Improvement
  • Conduct cost-related risk assessments, including inflation and supply-chain impacts.
  • Identify potential cost overruns early and drive mitigation strategies with project leadership.
  • Support internal audits and contribute to continuous improvement of budgeting and project control methodologies.


Cross-Functional Collaboration
  • Work closely with Operations, Engineering, Site Services, Geology, Procurement, Finance, and contractor teams to gather cost data and deliver accurate project reporting.
  • Coordinate with corporate groups (Project Services, Global Procurement, Finance, Legal) to ensure consistent processes and adherence to AGA standards.
  • Support Nevada Projects leadership by providing actionable financial insights and real-time cost visibility.


Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in finance, accounting, engineering, geology, or a related field.
  • Post-graduate studies in project management, financial management, or a related discipline are an asset.
  • 5-7 years of experience in mining, resources, or large-scale construction environments.
  • Strong background in budgeting, forecasting, financial reporting, or project cost control.
  • Experience supporting large CAPEX projects preferred.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to simplify financial information for non-financial teams.
  • Legally authorized to work in the United States.
  • Valid driver's license (field and site travel required).


Technical Skills & Knowledge
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills (complex formulas, pivot tables, charts, macros/VBA, financial models).
  • Experience with ERP and cost-management systems (SAP, Oracle, Contruent, etc.).
  • Proficiency in Power BI, Tableau, or similar visualization tools.
  • Understanding of project cost-management principles, rolling forecasts, and scenario-based reporting.
  • Ability to integrate data from tools such as Primavera P6 or MS Project.
  • Basic SQL/Power Query skills for data automation and multi-source data pulls.
  • Strong analytical skills with sound judgment and ability to prioritize work independently.
  • Understanding of mining project value drivers and capital project workflows.
