Northrop Grumman Space Systems-Missile Defense Integration offers an excellent opportunity for a Sr Principal Software Engineer (Algorithm) - TRK (26-332) to join our team of skilled and diverse professionals. Based in Huntsville, AL, this role is essential to supporting the U.S. President, the Secretary of Defense, and combatant commanders at the strategic, regional, and operational levels.

This position does not provide relocation assistance and requires on-site work with no remote options.

Position Overview:

The Command and Control, Battle Management, and Communications (C2BMC) program is a key component of the Missile Defense System. It is a vital operational system that enables the U.S. President, the Secretary of Defense, and combatant commanders at strategic, regional, and operational levels to plan ballistic missile defense operations systematically, collectively monitor the battle, and dynamically control networked sensors and weapon systems to achieve global and regional mission goals.

C2BMC supports layered missile defense capabilities that enable an optimized response to threats across all ranges and flight phases. It serves as a force multiplier by networking, integrating, and synchronizing autonomous sensor and weapon systems and operations, both globally and regionally, to improve performance. C2BMC is also essential for all ground and flight tests that verify and demonstrate the current and future capabilities of missile defense systems.

As a member of the Regional Applications (RA) Agile Release Train (ART) of the Missile Defense National Team for C2BMC (C2BMC NT), the SLD Algorithm Engineer Lead - TRK will be a key contributor to the design, development, integration, and leadership of Java-based mathematical algorithms in support of the C2BMC System Discrimination (SLD) mission area.

Essential Functions:

  • Lead the design and development of complex, Java-basedmathematical algorithms for SLD, with an emphasis on tracking and discrimination to support C2BMC operational capabilities
  • Develop and maintain algorithm-design artifacts, including architecture descriptions, design documentation, and technical presentations
  • Implement MATLAB and/or Java-based software changes and prototypes, and support the transition of prototype algorithms to real-time tactical Java implementations
  • Support and/or lead design and code reviews to ensure high-quality, maintainable, and testable software solutions
  • Perform software testing, data analysis, and troubleshooting; identify root causes of system behavior issues and recommend effective solutions
  • Support integration, testing, and verification of algorithm design and performance across lab, ground test, and flight test environments
  • Present developed designs, analyses, and results to internal and external stakeholders, including program leadership and customer representatives
  • Collaborate closely with Systems Engineering, Integration and Test, Deployment, and Warfighter Support teams to ensure mission success and alignment with operational requirements
  • Actively participate in agile planning and execution using established C2BMC processes, including work decomposition, backlog refinement, and leadership in sprint ceremonies
  • Mentor junior engineers and contribute to the continuous improvement of processes, tools, and technical approaches within RA ART

Basic Qualifications:

Please list your current security clearance and IAT or relevant certifications on your resume, if applicable.

  • A Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, or a related field from an accredited university, along with 8 years of experience; or a Master's degree in a related field with 6 years of relevant work experience; or 12 years of relevant work experience may be considered as an alternative to a degree
  • Applicants must have a current, active in-scope DoD-issued Secret security clearance at the time of application, which is required to start
  • Require 7+ years of experience in designing and developing complex mathematical algorithms related to data fusion, the transferable belief model, signal processing, sensor discrimination/classification, or Kalman filtering
  • Proficient in full life-cycle development, algorithm creation, data fusion, and software implementation of mathematical algorithms
  • Skilled in data analysis, whitepaper and concept development, and agile methodologies
  • Experienced with MATLAB, Python, DevSecOps, systems integration, Unix/Linux, and radar signal processing
  • Experience in analysis, testing, and verification of algorithm design and performance
  • Experience developing algorithm prototypes and overseeing the transition to real-time tactical implementation
  • Experience with strong problem-solving skills, including the ability to review system behavior issues, identify the root cause, and recommend a solution
  • The successful candidate will have strong verbal and written communication skills, the ability to work independently, and the ability to work in a highly dynamic environment
  • Candidate will need to be able to work with multiple disciplinary teams, including Systems Engineering, Integration and Test, Deployment, and Warfighter Support, to help ensure mission success

  • Applicants with a current, active DoD 8140 certification at IAT Level II or higher (such as Security+ CE, CCNA-Security, CySA+, CND, etc.) at the time of application are highly preferred. The candidate is responsible for maintaining their DoD 8140 certification throughout the entire contract period
  • Experience and knowledge in missile defense sensor discrimination
  • Experienced in the full life-cycle development of complex mathematical algorithms (including data fusion, tracking, correlation, guidance, battle management, and radar management) for Java-based military applications
  • Experience developing software within an agile development process, decomposing work, and providing active leadership during sprint planning
  • Experience developing algorithms and/or software in a structured, process-driven, integrated team environment
