Northrop Grumman Space Systems—Missile Defense Integration offers an excellent opportunity for a Sr Principal Software Engineer (26-355) to join our team of skilled and diverse professionals. Based in Colorado Springs, CO, this role is essential to supporting the U.S. President, the Secretary of Defense, and combatant commanders at the strategic, regional, and operational levels.

This position does not provide relocation assistance and requires on-site work with no remote options.

Position Overview:

The Command and Control, Battle Management, and Communications (C2BMC) program is a key component of the Missile Defense System. It is a vital operational system that enables the U.S. president, the Secretary of Defense, and combatant commanders at strategic, regional, and operational levels to plan ballistic missile defense operations systematically, collectively monitor the battle, and dynamically control networked sensors and weapon systems to achieve global and regional mission goals. C2BMC supports layered missile defense capabilities that enable an optimized response to threats across all ranges and flight phases. It serves as a force multiplier by networking, integrating, and synchronizing autonomous sensor and weapon systems and operations, both globally and regionally, to improve performance. C2BMC is essential for all ground and flight tests that verify and demonstrate the current and future capabilities of missile defense systems.

This role is for a Software Engineer working on the C2BMC program. The candidate will handle Java development for a Regional Applications team based in Colorado Springs, focusing on User Interface, Enterprise Services, or RA-An. Working with minimal supervision, the candidate will offer specialized knowledge across various systems and software areas, along with a broad understanding of related disciplines, application impacts, and customer needs.

Essential Functions:

  • Responsible for in-depth analysis and technical support for systems software products, including complex problem resolution, design, development, testing, operational integration, and user support
  • Maintains currency, debugs, and configures related software products
  • Works from specifications to develop or modify operating system applications
  • Assists with the design, coding, benchmark testing, debugging, and documentation of programs
  • Interfaces with other system support groups to resolve problems, set standards, and improve the operating system's overall efficiency
  • Designs, codes, tests, and implements tools for operational automation
  • Works on most phases of software systems programming applications and may require minor instruction and guidance in other phases
  • Leadership positions on small, software-focused teams may be required
  • Experience in software integration and formal testing
  • Thorough knowledge of software development best practices and the skill to implement them across multiple teams
  • Strong problem-solving abilities demonstrated through effective root cause analysis and issue resolution
  • Providing mentorship and guidance to junior engineers
  • Knowledge of server-side/database development and computer system administration
  • Strong problem-solving skills, including reviewing performance and operational issues, identifying root causes, and recommending, designing, and implementing solutions

Basic Qualifications:

  • A Bachelors Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, or a related field from an accredited university, along with 8 years of experience; or a Masters degree in a related field with 6 years of relevant work experience; or 12 years of relevant work experience may be considered as an alternative to a degree
  • Applicants must have a current, active in-scope DoD-issued Secret security clearance at the time of application, which is required to start
  • Proficiency in Python and at least one other object-oriented programming language (such as Java, C#, or C++)
  • Proven ability to mentor and motivate junior engineers, fostering a collaborative environment that promotes continuous learning and drives the team toward shared success
  • The candidate should possess strong oral and written communication abilities and be capable of working efficiently in a fast-paced team setting
  • Software engineering and development with strong Java/J2EE experience
  • The candidate should possess experience and knowledge of software practices, including coding standards, automated testing, automated build pipelines, and configuration management
  • Experience developing enterprise applications on Linux (Windows experience also desired)
  • Extensive Experience with Java Foundation Classes and Toolkits
  • Small team leadership experience (Agile team leadership experience strongly desired)
  • Other required technical skills include use of common software development and management tools such as Maven, Git/GitHub, Nexus, and Eclipse
  • Hands-on experience with Agile development practices
  • Understanding of standard systems engineering design artifacts such as Use Cases and SysML diagrams

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Expertise in net-centric, horizontal integration programs is a plus
  • Strong background supporting software engineering for DoD programs
  • Experience with command and control (C2) system application development
  • Experience with Agile software development methodologies
  • Experiencepresenting complex concepts to non-software-engineering audiences, including senior programleadership, government representatives, and military leaders
  • Willingness to take on unanticipated tasking
  • Strong knowledge of Atlassian tools (e.g., Jira, Confluence) to support Agile software development teams

Primary Level Salary Range: $129,300.00 - $193,900.00

The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.

Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
