Position OverviewTHIS IS A HYBRID ROLE BASED IN MONTVALE, NJThe Senior Power BI Developer owns the dashboards and reporting our business runs on. This is a Power BI-first, stakeholder-facing role: the majority of the work is designing, building, and maintaining Power BI dashboards - and partnering directly with Finance, Operations, Sales, and Marketing to turn ambiguous business questions into clear, trusted, decision-ready analytics.
A baseline understanding of data architecture (how a layered warehouse and dimensional models are structured) is important so you can collaborate effectively with data engineering and design performant, reliable reports. This role is ideal for someone who is a genuine Power BI craftsperson and equally comfortable sitting with a business leader to figure out what they actually need.
Essential Job FunctionsDashboard & Report Development (the core of the role)- Build and maintain Power BI dashboards - design, develop, and iterate interactive dashboards and reports on the curated reporting layer, using DAX, Power Query (M), and strong data-modeling and visualization practices.
- Own the Power BI semantic model - build and maintain star-schema data models, relationships, measures, and calculation logic that are performant and reusable across reports.
- Optimize performance - tune models, DAX, and queries for speed and reliability; make deliberate Import vs. DirectQuery choices and manage refresh/query cost against BigQuery.
Stakeholder Partnership & Business Intelligence- Understand the business problem - partner with Finance, Operations, Sales, and Marketing to translate ambiguous questions into well-defined KPIs, metric definitions, and the right visuals - confirming the requirement before building.
- Tell the story - apply data-visualization best practices to turn data into clear, usable insight - not just charts but answers a stakeholder can act on.
- Enable self-service - promote trusted, well-documented reports and datasets, and help business users get value from them independently.
- Document and build repeatable processes - maintain strong, clear documentation of requirements, metric definitions, and reporting logic, and establish repeatable processes and standards for how reporting requests are intake, prioritized, built, and validated.
Publishing, Governance & Report Lifecycle- Deploy and operate in the Power BI Service - publish and manage workspaces, apps, and scheduled/gateway-managed refreshes; own reports through their full lifecycle including maintenance, troubleshooting, and UAT.
- Apply security and governance - implement row-level security (RLS) and follow governance best practices so the right people see the right data.
- Document - maintain metric definitions, data-model documentation, and report catalogs so reporting is understandable and maintainable.
Collaboration with Data Engineering- Work the DE / BI seam - the data engineering function owns ingestion, pipelines, and the raw/transformed layers; you own the reporting layer and everything Power BI. Partner on data contracts, required datasets, freshness expectations, and reporting-layer schema so dashboards are built on a trusted foundation.
Required QualificationsCore must-haves- Power BI mastery - hands-on expertise across DAX, Power Query (M), data modeling, and row-level security - able to build and maintain dashboards independently, end to end.
- Advanced SQL - writing and optimizing complex queries (BigQuery preferred).
- Stakeholder & requirements skill - proven ability to gather requirements, translate business questions into metrics, and communicate clearly with non-technical audiences.
- Data-visualization judgment - a strong sense for visual best practices, dashboard UX, and data storytelling.
- Baseline data architecture understanding - dimensional modeling (star/snowflake), layered warehouse concepts, and how curated datasets are produced - enough to collaborate with data engineering and design reliable reports.
- 5-7 years in business intelligence, Power BI development, analytics, or a related field.
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Analytics, or a related field - or equivalent practical experience.
- Strong problem-solving, a business-first mindset, and excellent cross-functional communication.
- Ability to connect Power BI directly to a cloud data warehouse (BigQuery preferred), not just flat files.
Preferred Qualifications- Certifications - Microsoft Certified: Power BI Data Analyst Associate (PL-300); Fabric Analytics Engineer Associate (DP-600) a plus.
- Microsoft Fabric - familiarity with Fabric, semantic models, and Copilot / AI-assisted analytics features.
- Power BI Service administration - deployment pipelines, workspace governance, gateway configuration, and capacity/refresh management.
- Domain fit - healthcare, Pharma/OTC, agency, or marketing-analytics experience; familiarity with CRM/ERP data such as Salesforce and NetSuite.
- Light scripting - some Python or scripting for data prep or automation is helpful (but pipeline development is owned by data engineering).
- AI tooling - experience using AI/LLM platforms to accelerate analytics work (e.g., Copilot, Claude).
