The Materials and Process Engineering Department, part of the Hardware Engineering organization, is seeking a Materials Engineer to support Global Chemical Substance Operations within our Design and Development team in Tucson, AZ. This role is critical in ensuring our products meet worldwide chemical substance regulations and customer-specific compliance requirements throughout their lifecycle.

The role will involve evaluation of a variety of materials and verification/validation that materials and processes used on products follow contract-specific requirements related to global chemical substance regulations. Tasks will require critical thinking to solve challenging problems and careful attention to detail on procedures and documentation of results. Collaboration with design engineers, manufacturing engineers, subject matter experts, and suppliers is required. A candidate must be able to manage and coordinate a wide variety of simultaneous tasks within set schedule requirements. The ideal candidate will have experience in materials engineering, regulatory compliance, global substance regulations (REACH, RoHS, TSCA, etc.), and the ability to assess material risks, obsolescence, and suitable alternatives for hardware products.

What You Will Do
  • Support Global Chemical Substance Operations by evaluating materials, processes, and components used in product design and manufacturing for compliance with regulations such as REACH, RoHS, and other global directives.
  • Conduct material-level compliance assessments during hardware design reviews and production activities.
  • Ensure proper verification and validation of material compliance and maintain detailed documentation in accordance with established procedures.
  • Support process improvements, standardization efforts, and digital capabilities related to global chemical substances.
  • Prepare and deliver compliance reports, material declarations, and regulatory submissions.
  • Interface with internal teams (design engineering, manufacturing engineering, supply chain) and external suppliers to collect accurate material composition data.
  • Recommend compliant substitutes or alternate materials in coordination with design engineers, suppliers, and subject matter experts.
  • Develop, enhance, and maintain tools, databases, and reporting methods used for chemical substance tracking and compliance documentation.
  • Identify and manage risks related to material obsolescence, restricted substances, emerging regulations, and material substitutions.
  • Reviewing program Bill of Materials (BOMs) against current Global Chemical Substance requirements (e.g., EU REACH, NAS411-1, etc.)
  • Maintain compliance scheme for International and European regulations of handling hazardous chemicals
  • Analyze other EU regulatory compliance requirements related to chemicals for import and export and support business departments in their compliance procedures (RoHS, PIC, Waste regulation, etc.)
  • Enacting plans to maintain compliance with, and mitigate risk triggered by, international global chemical regulations
  • Providing subject matter support to functions and programs, managing arising issues and triggering activities to support compliance when required
  • Engage subject matter experts (SME) to support programs in their substitution to alternative chemistries

Qualifications You Must Have
  • Typically requires A University Degree or equivalent experience and minimum 5 years prior relevant experience, or An Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 3 years experience
  • Experience in global chemical regulations (i.e. REACH (SVHC reporting, Annex XVII), RoHS (material restrictions), TSCA, and similar standards)


Qualifications We Prefer
  • Experience working on programs, projects, or products associated with the Defense Industry
  • Experience working with engineering drawings
  • Ability to analyze materials for compliance risk, obsolescence trends, and substitution impacts.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate across engineering, regulatory, and supply chain teams.
  • Experience with material compliance tools, substance declaration systems.
  • Experience with global and/or regional product regulations and in regulations of national authorities.
  • Experience with mechanical and/or chemical analysis methods and characterization techniques
  • Ability to write concise technical reports summarizing analyses
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, planning and time management skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with coworkers from different communities and cultures
  • Manage multiple tasks and deadlines in a fast paced engineering environment.

The salary range for this role is 86,800 USD - 165,200 USD. The salary range provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels. RTX considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the role, function and associated responsibilities, a candidate's work experience, location, education/training, and key skills.
