The Senior Manager - Construction provides strategic and operational leadership for the construction and controls functions, overseeing a portfolio of commercial construction projects from planning through closeout. This role also has oversight of the Controls Dept (planning, staffing, and projects). This role is accountable for project execution, workforce planning, subcontractor strategy, safety, quality, financial performance, customer satisfaction, and cross-functional coordination. The Senior Manager leads construction managers, project managers, field leadership, and skilled trades teams, ensuring resources are aligned to business priorities and projects are delivered safely, profitably, on time, and in accordance with customer requirements, contracts, and applicable laws.
- Provides senior-level leadership for the planning, execution, financial performance, and successful completion of multiple complex commercial construction projects or a portfolio of projects.
- Establishes construction priorities, resource plans, and master schedules to optimize labor utilization, subcontractor performance, project sequencing, and customer commitments.
- Leads and develops Construction Managers, Project Managers, Project Coordinators, field leadership, and skilled trades teams, driving accountability, succession planning, performance management, and professional growth.
- Oversees the work of technician workforces, including pipefitting, sheet metal, plumbing, and other specialized trades, ensuring compliance with customer requirements, contracts, and federal, state, and local laws.
- Partners with Account Managers, Sales, Operations, Finance, Procurement, Safety, Human Resources, customers, vendors, and subcontractors to align project delivery with business objectives.
- Provides senior-level estimating, preconstruction, scope review, and risk assessment support for complex opportunities, change orders, and customer proposals.
- Conducts and directs jobsite reviews to monitor progress, safety, quality, productivity, staffing, and adherence to project specifications and company standards.
- Develops and oversees vendor and subcontractor selection, scheduling, performance management, contract compliance, and issue resolution strategies.
- Monitors project budgets, job costs, technician productivity, utilization, forecasting, margin performance, billing, change orders, and department key performance indicators to achieve financial objectives.
- Serves as an escalation leader for high-risk projects, customer concerns, subcontractor matters, labor issues, safety events, and field technician challenges.
- Identifies operational risks and implements mitigation plans related to schedule, manpower, safety, quality, budget, contract compliance, and customer satisfaction.
- Champions a culture of safety, quality, teamwork, accountability, continuous improvement, and positive working relationships with employees, customers, vendors, subcontractors, and employee representatives.
Requirements:- High School Diploma or GED equivalent required.
- Technical school training in HVAC, mechanical systems, construction trades, or a related field strongly preferred.
- Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Mechanical Engineering, Business, Operations Management, or related field preferred; equivalent combination of education and relevant experience may be considered.
- 10+ years of progressive experience in commercial construction, HVAC/mechanical construction, estimating, project management, field operations, or operations leadership.
- 5 - 10 years of people leadership experience, including direct supervision of managers, project teams, field leadership, skilled trades, or multi-disciplinary construction teams.
- Demonstrated experience managing multiple complex projects, project portfolios, subcontractor relationships, budgets, labor planning, and customer-facing escalations.
- Advanced knowledge of commercial construction practices, HVAC/mechanical systems, project management principles, field operations, safety requirements, and contract administration.
- Proven ability to build and manage master schedules, labor plans, subcontractor strategies, and project controls across multiple concurrent projects.
- Strong business and financial acumen, including budgeting, forecasting, job cost analysis, margin management, productivity tracking, billing, and change order oversight.
- Demonstrated ability to lead through managers and field leaders, including coaching, performance management, conflict resolution, succession planning, and employee engagement.
- Ability to assess project risk, resolve escalated customer or field issues, and make sound decisions in complex, time-sensitive situations.
- Ability to foster effective relationships with employees, customers, subcontractors, vendors, internal business partners, and employee representatives.
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, contracts, project documentation, and applicable compliance requirements.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, scheduling software, ERP systems, project management tools, and reporting dashboards.
- Ability to travel to local job sites up to 75%.
