The Regional Associate Dean, Interior oversees and supports the delivery of Faculty of Medicine (FoM) medical education and research activity through the Interior Health (IH) region. The education activities are delivered in partnership with Interior Health (IH); over 1600 clinicians and allied health professionals across the Interior Health region support learning and clinical training for medical students and residents.
The Southern Medical Program (SMP) is a regional education site for the Faculty of Medicine’s distributed Doctor of Medicine Undergraduate Program (MDUP) Home - MD Undergrad Education, UBC Faculty of Medicine). The SMP delivers its education and training at education sites including regional and community hospitals, community health centres, and family physician offices in 30 different communities. The SMP training sites are located across the traditional, ancestral and unceded territories of the Tŝilhqot’in, Secwépemc, Dãkelh Dené, St’át’imc, Syilx, Nlaka’pamux, and Ktunaxa Nations, comprised of 54 First Nations Communities. There are 15 Métis Chartered Communities within the Interior region.
The Faculty of Medicine delivers Postgraduate Medical Education (PGME) in Family Practice and over 80 specialty and subspecialty programs recognized by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and the College of Family Physicians of Canada (Home - UBC - Faculty Of Medicine - Postgraduate Medical Education). Within the Interior Health region, there are Family Practice sites, including Enhanced Skills Emergency Medicine, as well as Royal College specialty programs.
The Centre for Chronic Disease Prevention and Management (CCDPM) is a Faculty of Medicine research centre based at UBC Okanagan (Centre for Chronic Disease Prevention and Management (ubc.ca). The Centre is focused on fostering new discoveries, collaborating with industry leaders, and progressing health science in the urgent research field of chronic disease prevention.
Faculty, staff and learners are located through the Interior region at clinical sites in hospital settings as well as at the University of British Columbia Okanagan (UBCO) Campus.
Job Description Summary
The Sr. Financial Analyst, Interior is responsible for preparing budget submissions, variance analysis, responses to financial queries and other analysis as required by the Faculty of Medicine Interior education and research portfolios.
The Sr. Financial Analyst, Interior works with and advises faculty leadership and management of the education programs and research activities, including the Centre for Chronic Disease Prevention and Management (CCDPM).This position manages cash flows, and prepares complex financial reports on both a scheduled and on an as-required basis. The work takes place in an environment of changing priorities and tight timelines.
The Sr. Financial Analyst works with the Faculty of Medicine Education and Research financial colleagues and leadership to meet the financial management objectives of programs and units within the Faculty of Medicine, particularly the statutory reporting and budgeting requirements for the distributed undergraduate medical education program. Reporting to Administrative Director, Interior and taking direction from the Associate Director of Finance, Education Services, the Sr. Financial Analyst, Interior is also responsible for interpret University and Faculty policies and procedures and to implement financial systems in the Interior portfolio.
Organizational Status
Reports to the Director Administration, Interior and takes direction from the Associate Director of Finance, Education Services, Faculty of Medicine. Is expected to work independently in a collaborative and professional environment. The incumbent is expected to communicate and work effectively at all levels throughout the Faculty of Medicine, and with financial staff at UBC Vancouver and Okanagan campuses, partner universities (UVic and UNBC), and the Interior Health Authority as required.

Consequence of Error/Judgement
The Sr. Financial Analyst must have a thorough understanding of the principles of accounting and sound financial management skills. They are required to apply this theoretical knowledge to research the information needs of faculty management, develop structures to collect the data required, and create processes to compile the data into meaningful reporting formats which enable financial results and risks to be readily determined. The position is required to use judgment to interpret financial information received from a variety of sources, assess financial risks and problems, and make recommendations to manage the risks and resolve financial issues.
Reports reviewed and shared by this position must be correct, contain the appropriate, complete information, and present the information in a manner that enables them to be easily understood by Interior and Faculty of Medicine Unit leaders. Errors in the information/reports prepared by this position could result in poor financial decisions by Senior Management. If reports to funders (such as the Ministry of Health) are incorrect, this could damage the relationship with the funder, cause significant reputation losses to the Faculty. In addition, if the information presented does not support appropriate financial monitoring, then problems could be overlooked and continue to worsen over time and thus jeopardize the financial health of the Faculty and the University.
