RWE Americas is looking for a strong candidate for our BESS Technology Optimization team as the Sr BESS Optimization Engineer. This position within the BESS Technology Optimization team will be responsible for managing technical solutions with a project development mindset and ensuring utility-scale energy storage projects are built with state-of-the-art technology and design features and can fulfill dispatch and use cases for evolving market conditions.

Role Responsibilities:
  • Support and drive strategic planning that impacts product selection, technology roadmap, or project standardization
  • Contribute to the evaluation of emerging storage technologies with a focus on long-duration capability, cost reduction, reliability, and lifecycle performance
  • Participate in continuous improvement of standard project designs, driving optimization in cost, performance, constructability, and operational reliability
  • Coordinate priorities with Development, Procurement, and EPC to align engineering and business needs
  • Participate in enterprise forums and technical steering committees
  • Ability to identify, evaluate, and resolve complex problems with limited oversight
  • Provide technical due diligence support for storage suppliers or new equipment introductions
  • Influence system architecture standards and performance expectations across projects
  • Contribute to internal development of energy storage system designs, including cooling system architecture (air and liquid), controls strategy, and thermal performance modeling
  • Mentor junior engineers and establish best practices for product evaluation, testing, reporting, and safety compliance


Job Requirements and Experiences:
  • Master's degree in engineering from an accredited college or university preferred
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering is required
  • A minimum of 7 years of proven experience with energy storage technologies, with an understanding of OEMs, products, and use cases
  • Proven product management and product development experience
  • Intellectually curious with a passion for exploring emerging energy storage technologies and challenging conventional approaches
  • Open-minded and receptive to diverse perspectives, data-driven decision-making, and continuous learning
  • Experience mentoring engineers and technical resources and ability to drive high performance and cultivate talent
  • Proven ability to empathize, build relationships, and effectively communicate with people from a diverse set of backgrounds


Work Environment:

This position is an office-based role with some travel and visits to other RWE Americas offices and field locations. The employee must be able to sit, walk, or stand for long durations of time.

Pay range: The annual base salary range for this position in Illinois is $140,000 - $150,000. The listed salary range represents our good faith estimate for this position and represents the range for new hire salaries across all U.S locations. Please note that the salary information is a general guideline only. RWE considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's education & work experience, training & certifications, and key skills as well as market and business considerations at the time of the offer.
