Full Job Description
Position Summary:
Fabick Cat is seeking a highly skilled Senior Database Engineer to oversee and support multiple business-critical applications and database platforms across the enterprise. This is not a traditional database administrator role -- the Senior Database Engineer serves as the technical owner across a portfolio of third-party and in-house systems, managing the full project lifecycle from requirements through implementation.

This position plays a critical role in Fabick Cat's data modernization effort, helping define, build, test, and implement a future-state, cloud-based data architecture. This future-state architecture is intended to lend itself heavily to enterprise AI adoption and to support an upcoming ERP migration. The Senior Database Engineer works closely with IT leadership, business partners, and other IT teams to ensure database and data platform solutions are secure, scalable, and aligned with Fabick Cat's strategic objectives and Caterpillar's digital vision.

The position can be based out of Fenton, MO Or Milwaukee, WI

Responsibilities:

Database & Application Platform Ownership
  • Serve as technical owner of multiple third-party and in-house database platforms and applications, overseeing the full project lifecycle including requirements, development, testing, and implementation.
  • Design, build, and administer APIs and system integrations that connect databases, applications, and third-party platforms, ensuring secure, reliable, and well-documented data exchange.
  • Oversee data warehouse operations; troubleshoot and resolve issues across supported systems.
  • Assist with project planning and provide technical database expertise to team members and vendors.
  • Evaluate database technologies and collaborate with vendors to enhance supported platforms and align solutions with business needs.

Data Modernization & Cloud Architecture
  • Actively incorporate AI tools into daily database engineering work -- beyond basic prompting -- to accelerate tasks such as query and script development, troubleshooting, documentation, code review, and data analysis; model and promote effective AI-assisted ways of working for the broader team.
  • Design and support data architecture patterns that enable enterprise AI adoption, including data pipelines, integration points, and governance structures that support AI and agentic workloads.
  • Support the technical planning and execution of the organization's ERP migration ensuring database and data platform readiness.
  • Evaluate and implement cloud database technologies, primarily on Azure, using emerging cloud and AI-enabled data architecture patterns.

Data Governance, Security & Standards
  • Define, develop, communicate, and implement data standards, processes, and procedures for the team and department.
  • Ensure database and data platform solutions adhere to data security, compliance, and governance frameworks, including appropriate data cataloging and access controls.
  • Provide business users with data, reporting, and business intelligence to drive business decisions.

Collaboration & Mentorship
  • Understand and translate business requirements into database and data architecture designs that align with overall business and technology vision.
  • Establish, maintain, and foster relationships within and outside the team, department, and vendors.
  • Provide instruction and guidance to less senior team members on new tasks and assignments; ensure deadlines are met.
