Job Summary

Murphy Oil is seeking a Senior Corporate Accountant to join our Corporate Accounting team. The Senior Corporate Accountant will support general accounting activities and help drive standardized general ledger and close processes across the organization. This role will also identify and support opportunities to improve accounting processes through AI-enabled tools, automation, analytics, and system enhancements while maintaining strong controls, data integrity, and compliance. The initial focus will be completing day-to-day general ledger responsibilities, with a longer-term expectation to help enable faster, more efficient, and more automated accounting processes.

The Sr Corporate Accountant will work in our Houston Corporate office and may work two (2) days a week remotely, as business needs allow.

Responsibilities

  • Perform monthly accounting activities for financial close accurately and timely
  • Identify repetitive accounting tasks and support process improvements through workflow automation, AI-enabled tools, and system enhancements where appropriate.
  • Evaluate opportunities to apply AI, automation, and system tools while appropriately considering data quality, security, compliance, internal controls, and business process impact.
  • Manage G&A, Cash, FX, Pension, Intercompany, Lease and Derivative accounting/reporting
  • Perform reconciliations on accounting records
  • Perform financial analysis
  • Comply with relevant accounting standards and SOX controls
  • Assist with internal and external audits


Licenses/ Certifications

CMA, CPA or equivalent certifications preferred

Qualifications/ Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting or Finance, Economics, Data Analytics or related field
  • Minimum 10 years' experience in accounting or reporting with an understanding of Sarbanes Oxley (SOX) compliance documentation
  • Advanced knowledge in MS Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and data analysis tools
  • Hands-on knowledge with AI-enabled productivity tools, workflow automation, Power BI, Power Query, Power Automate, or similar finance technology tools preferred
  • Curiosity and willingness to learn emerging technologies, including AI tools, automation platforms, and reporting solutions that support finance and accounting operations
  • Commitment to continuous improvement
  • Strong work ethic and excellent organizational skills
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment


The individual is required to follow all applicable safety precautions. Work is performed almost entirely in a controlled (i.e., inside) environment and does not typically subject the incumbent to any hazardous/extreme elements; some positions may require regularly moving or transporting items weighing up to 25 lbs. around the office for various needs. The successful candidate must be able to complete all essential physical requirements of the job with or without reasonable accommodation.

Desired/ Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional service (Big 4 or other) accounting experience preferred
  • Proficient in SAP
  • Familiar with US GAAP and exposure to SEC reporting
  • Experience with oil and gas industry
