Job Summary

Evaluates, diagnoses, and provides treatment for patient/residents with varied disorders of communication and/or swallowing, carries out administrative duties associated with patient/resident care, and contributes to program/department operations appropriate to the specific site. In addition, possesses advanced clinical expertise, supervises staff from a clinical practice perspective, and provides co-treatment and educational services for the program/department.

Essential Functions
  • Responsible for direct patient/resident care as appropriate to site:
  • Diagnoses speech/language and swallowing disorders by using standardized and non-standardized test procedures and methods, case history, medical information and presenting speech/language and swallowing symptomatology.
  • Determine appropriateness of intervention, the need for referral to other specialists and prognosis.
  • Develops appropriate long and short-term goals.
  • Plans, directs, and administers age appropriate individual and/or group treatment program based on evaluation results that lead to achievement of goals and are designed to restore and improve communication and/or swallowing.
  • Determine recommendation for follow-up treatment and/or evaluation upon discharge.
  • Completes documentation according to facility time frames and requirements.
  • Correctly identifies and bills for therapy services rendered.
  • Attends and reports at rounds and team conferences.
  • Is aware of safety precautions and able to carry out emergency procedures.
  • Attends and participates in in-service programs.
  • Prepares materials for evaluation and treatment activities.
  • Provides patient/resident/family education and training and participates in family conferences.
  • Demonstrates ability to lead treatment group.
  • Demonstrates excellent written oral and communication skills.
  • Responsible for 100% direct patient care at assigned site.
  • Communicates information to patient/resident, family, physician(s), rehabilitation team, and other associated professionals as indicated by written and oral reports.
  • Demonstrates advanced clinical evaluation and treatment skills and shares that information with team in consultation with supervisor/manager/program director.
  • Contributes to efficient hospital/facility, program/division and team functioning.
  • Active participant in hospital/facility, program/department and team problem solving and projects.
  • Volunteers assistance where needed.
  • Supervises rehab aides and volunteers as appropriate.
  • Provide in-service training for staff as requested.
  • Notifies the Director/Manager of need of equipment, materials or supplies, or follows department procedure.
  • Participates in program/division maintenance.
  • Maintains and contributes to safe work environment.
  • Maintains an awareness of programs/hospital issues, projects a cooperative attitude, and promotes positive problem solving.
  • Complies with program and facility mission, values and policies.
  • Covers for team leader as indicated.
  • Participates in new staff orientation/competency assessment as indicated.
  • Participates in student training program as needed.
  • Actively participates in the supervision process:
  • Communicates needs to appropriate program/department personnel.
  • Modifies performance in response to feedback.
  • Notifies appropriate personnel of unusual patient/resident findings in a timely manner.
  • Demonstrates an awareness of limitations and seeks supervision appropriately.
  • Demonstrates the ability to translate knowledge of physical, psychosocial, and cognitive perceptual changes related to age into assessments, treatment plans and treatment modalities for adolescent, young adult, adult and geriatric patients/residents.
  • Completes annual career ladder requirements.
  • Practices Standard Precautions. Follows regulations, policies and guidelines on the prevention of infections; does not eat or drink in patient care areas.
  • Maintains confidentiality of information; abides by HIPAA regulations.
  • Maintains a professional image and follows Hospital's policy on uniforms; consistently wears hospital ID.
  • Demonstrates reliable, on-time attendance, which is an essential function of all jobs at Burke.
  • Completes mandatory annual learning (Learning Harbor) within deadline.
  • Personally adheres to Burke C.A.R.E.S. philosophy by demonstrating compassion, accountability, respect and exceeding expectations through service excellence.

Qualifications

  • Works with program/site personnel; interdisciplinary personnel, including physicians, consulting otolaryngologist; patients, family members; students, visitors
  • Manual dexterity for working equipment controls (e.g., tape recorders, audio-visuals devices, augmentative communication systems, hearing aids, etc.) and for examining oral mechanism.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Often needs to manipulate wheelchairs into a small area
  • Speech-Language Pathologist - New York State Board of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology Required
  • BLS - American Heart Association Required
