Overview
The Assistant Nurse Manager partners with the Nurse Manager to support the daily operations, clinical excellence, and overall success of the unit. This leadership role helps coordinate patient care services, drive quality and performance improvement initiatives, support fiscal stewardship, and ensure compliance with organizational policies, regulatory standards, and best practices.
The Assistant Nurse Manager plays an active role in fostering a positive, engaged work environment through staff development, coaching, communication, and participation in key personnel processes. Working collaboratively with interdisciplinary teams across the organization, this leader helps navigate change, support operational priorities, and promote exceptional patient outcomes. As a key member of the leadership team, the Assistant Nurse Manager serves as a trusted resource for staff and provides valuable leadership bench strength for the Nurse Manager role.
Responsibilities
- Partner with the Nurse Manager to support the day-to-day operations of the unit, ensuring the delivery of high-quality, patient-centered care.
- Assist with staff assessments, competency validation, and skill proficiency evaluations to promote clinical excellence and professional growth.
- Support staffing and scheduling processes to maintain appropriate coverage and optimize unit operations.
- Assist in the management of equipment, supplies, and other resources to ensure operational readiness and efficiency.
- Contribute to patient experience and satisfaction initiatives, helping to foster a positive care environment for patients and families.
- Participate in personnel management activities, including recruitment, onboarding, staff development, performance evaluations, coaching, and corrective action processes.
- Monitor and promote compliance with organizational policies, procedures, accreditation standards, and regulatory requirements.
- Serve as a communication resource for staff, patients, physicians, and interdisciplinary team members, fostering collaboration and engagement.
- Support the Nurse Manager in making informed operational decisions and leading change management initiatives within the department.
- Collaborate effectively with leaders and team members across departments to achieve organizational goals and improve patient outcomes.
- Act as a leadership resource and role model, helping to maintain a positive, accountable, and team-focused culture.
- Provide leadership coverage and operational support in the absence of the Nurse Manager.
- Utilize a personal cell phone for business-related communication and operational needs as required.
Qualifications
- Current licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN) in the State of Delaware or eligibility to practice under the Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC).
- Minimum of five (5) years of Emergency Department nursing experience required, with demonstrated clinical expertise in a fast-paced acute care environment.
- One to two (1-2) years of progressive leadership experience required, such as Charge Nurse, Nursing Supervisor, Assistant Nurse Manager, or other formal healthcare leadership roles.
- Proven ability to lead teams, foster collaboration, support staff development, and promote a culture of quality, safety, and patient-centered care.
- Strong communication, critical thinking, decision-making, and organizational skills with the ability to effectively manage competing priorities.
Credentials
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
- NIH Stroke Certification.
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification.
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Certification
Education
- Bachelor's Degree in Nursing (Magnet Recognition preferred) OR RN Diploma/RN Graduate Program + Bachelor's Degree in a related field.
- Active pursuit of a Master's degree in Nursing (MSN) if not already possessing a BSN.
