Position Summary

Mission Solutions Group (MSG) is seeking an experienced Software Safety Engineer to support the PME CBAD/Kestros program. This position will execute and support software and system safety engineering activities throughout the system lifecycle, from concept exploration and design through testing, certification, and field deployment.

The ideal candidate will have extensive systems or software engineering experience within aerospace or defense environments and demonstrated experience applying system safety principles to complex, safety-critical systems.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Lead and execute Software System Safety Program activities in accordance with applicable military standards from concept exploration through live-fire testing and field deployment.
  • Conduct qualitative and quantitative hazard analyses, including Functional Hazard Analysis (FHA), System/Subsystem Hazard Analysis (SSHA), Fault Tree Analysis (FTA), and Software Hazard Analysis (SWHA).
  • Identify system and software hazards and translate findings into functional, non-functional, and software-specific safety requirements and design constraints.
  • Maintain bidirectional traceability of safety requirements through verification and validation activities.
  • Review embedded software code, primarily C/C++, software architectures, and interface definitions to identify potential safety-critical issues such as race conditions, memory leaks, interface failures, and logic faults.
  • Maintain the program Hazard Tracking System, including causal factors, Level of Rigor (LOR) tasks, mitigations, verification evidence, and residual risk assessments.
  • Develop and maintain safety and certification documentation, including System Safety Program Plans (SSPP), Software Safety Plans, hazard analyses, and Safety Assessment Reports (SAR).
  • Prepare and present safety cases, technical briefs, hazard analyses, and compliance evidence to program leadership, government stakeholders, prime contractors, and formal defense review authorities.
  • Support safety reviews such as the Weapon System Explosives Safety Review Board (WSESRB) and Software Systems Safety Technical Review Panel (SSSTRP), as applicable.

Education and Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a closely related STEM discipline.
  • 10+ years of systems engineering, software engineering, or related engineering experience.
  • Minimum of 3 years of direct system or software safety engineering experience within aerospace, defense, weapons systems, or other safety-critical applications.
  • Demonstrated experience applying MIL-STD-882E to system and/or software safety programs.
  • Experience performing and documenting safety analyses including FHA, SSHA, FTA, and SWHA.
  • Experience developing safety requirements, hazard mitigations, verification evidence, and residual risk assessments.
  • Ability to evaluate software architectures and embedded C/C++ implementations from a system safety perspective.
  • Strong technical writing, communication, and presentation skills.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience supporting DoD weapons system safety programs.
  • Practical experience with MIL-STD-882E Tasks 204, 205, and 207.
  • Working knowledge of the Joint Software Systems Safety Engineering Handbook (JSSSEH).
  • Experience supporting WSESRB, SSSTRP, or similar government safety certification/review boards.
  • Experience with safety-critical embedded software and complex defense systems.
