We’re looking for a Software Engineer II - Hardware Automation to join our team in Cedar Rapids, IA, this role will assist in shaping the future of military communications. At Collins Aerospace, our Communication Systems directorate delivers some of the most advanced solutions in the industry—technology that keeps military personnel safe, connected, and mission-ready.
In this role, you’ll test and validate the next-generation systems powering UAVs, fighter jets, aircraft carriers, and ground vehicles. From advanced satellite communications and cryptography to cutting-edge embedded computing architectures, you’ll ensure our solutions meet the highest standards for speed, security, and resilience.

What You Will Do:
Dive into a hands-on role working with cutting-edge military communication hardware and industry standard test equipment.
Showcase your coding skills by designing and developing software solutions to automate hardware test stations in engineering lab and factory environments.
Play a key role in defining clear test objectives to ensure hardware interfaces meet requirements and deliver exceptional performance.
Apply a critical thinking mindset by analyzing test results and troubleshooting failures.
Collaborate with a talented team of Software, Systems, and Electrical Engineers to create innovative solutions and share ideas.
Contribute to projects across multiple programs, gaining exposure to a wide range of technologies and applications.
Qualifications You Must Have:
Knowledge of C# or Python to bring your ideas to life.
Proficient with version control software such as Git and Subversion
Background in Windows development environments
Experience in verification testing to ensure reliability and precision.
Fundamental knowledge of communication technologies like Ethernet, serial, and fiber optics.
A basic understanding of test equipment such as oscilloscopes, network analyzers, and multimeters.
Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and minimum 2 years of prior relevant experience oran Advanced Degree in a related field
Qualifications We Prefer:
Active U.S. government-issued security clearance (or eligibility to obtain one).
Good communication and problem-solving skills to thrive in a collaborative environment.
Experience in Linux development environments.
Bonus skills like experience with SCPI commands and test management systems.
Familiarity with software/hardware testing methods.
Hands-on knowledge of networking protocols (TCP, UDP, Telnet) and embedded protocols (I2C, SPI, UART).
Experience working in Agile (SAFe) teams.

The salary range for this role is 68,900 USD - 131,100 USD. The salary range provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels. RTX considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the role, function and associated responsibilities, a candidate’s work experience, location, education/training, and key skills.
