Full Job Description

Job Description

GM's Advanced Analytics team turns the engineering organization's data into decisions, then builds the software that puts those decisions in front of the people making them.
We do the analytics and data science: forecasting and statistical analysis of program execution, the KPIs engineering leadership runs the business on, curated Databricks data products across parts, bills of material, engineering changes, warranty, and resource demand, and a growing amount of AI tooling. Our partners span vehicle hardware engineering, software and electronics, supplier quality, warranty, and program management.

The Role

This role serves as the second software engineer on a rapidly growing portfolio, supporting end‑to‑end feature development. Work often begins with understanding how vehicle program stakeholders operate and extends through designing schemas, building APIs, developing interfaces, wiring data pipelines, and monitoring service‑level objectives after deployment.

Weekly work may span tuning Postgres query plans, building and refining React components, writing Databricks jobs, and adjusting Kubernetes manifests. As the software engineer embedded within a team of data scientists, the position is responsible for defining and executing how software solutions are built.

What You'll Do (Responsibilities)

  • Contribute as part of a cross‑functional team to propose and implement high‑impact, data‑driven software and analytic solutions for engineering organizations.
  • Build and deliver end‑to‑end features, including Python services, relational data models, and TypeScript/React interfaces.
  • Develop and maintain data pipelines that integrate GM’s engineering systems of record into applications and data products.
  • Collaborate with data scientists to operationalize analytical work and deliver it to end users through scalable products.
  • Deploy and operate production systems using Kubernetes on Azure, CI/CD workflows, infrastructure as code, and modern observability practices.
  • Partner with stakeholders across vehicle hardware, software, electronics, supplier quality, and program management to translate workflows into adoptable software solutions.
  • Ensure interfaces are intuitive and user‑friendly, with attention to daily usability and feedback from engineering teams.
  • Participate in and lead code reviews, testing efforts, and documentation to maintain high engineering standards.

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field
  • 2+ years of experience building and shipping production software
  • Proficiency in Python and TypeScript/JavaScript, including experience with modern component‑based web frameworks such as React.
  • Working knowledge of SQL and relational data modeling.
  • Experience guiding a feature from ambiguous requirements through design, implementation, testing, code review, and production deployment.
  • Ability to work directly with non‑engineering stakeholders and translate their needs into clear technical decisions.

What Will Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)

  • 3+ years of experience writing production-quality software
  • Experience with FastAPI or other asynchronous Python web frameworks, and familiarity with SQLAlchemy.
  • Background in Next.js, React Server Components, or comparable modern full‑stack React frameworks.
  • Depth in PostgreSQL, including schema design, query optimization, and migration management.
  • Experience with Databricks, PySpark, Delta Lake, or similar large‑scale data processing technologies.
  • Experience deploying to Kubernetes on a major cloud platform—ideally Azure—using GitOps and infrastructure‑as‑code practices.
  • Strong attention to user experience and design systems.
  • Experience integrating enterprise systems of record and building reliable data products on top of them.
  • Prior work as the software engineer on a data‑ or analytics‑heavy team.
  • Familiarity with automotive or manufacturing product development processes, such as vehicle program timing, PLM, or bill‑of‑material data.
  • Experience as an early engineer on a product, contributing to foundational patterns and technical direction.

Compensation:

  • The expected base compensation for this role is $104,500- $189,100 USD Annually
  • Actual base compensation within the identified range will vary based on factors relevant to the position
  • Bonus Potential: An incentive pay program offers payouts based on company performance, job level, and individual performance

Benefits:

GM offers a variety of health and wellbeing benefit programs. Benefit options include medical, dental, vision, Health Savings Account, Flexible Spending Accounts, retirement savings plan, sickness and accident benefits, life insurance, paid vacation & holidays, tuition assistance programs, employee assistance program, GM vehicle discounts and more.
