We are looking for a Software Development Manager experienced in SSD firmware development to own next-generation storage solution development for AWS world-scale compute and storage. The ideal candidate will be a hands-on leader seasoned in building and leading software and firmware teams developing vertically integrated, NAND-based storage solutions on custom-built storage controllers.
As a manager, you will lead a team of highly motivated software developers who thrive on solving challenging problems with innovative solutions. The team couples software and firmware skill sets with storage and scalable software engineering disciplines to solve real-world data storage problems. You will lead a team building, validating, and operating software solutions across diverse technology domains, primarily embedded software platforms, in C/C++ and other languages, using both proprietary and open-source technologies and Amazon services. You are highly organized, data-driven, and passionate about recruiting, leading, and developing world-class engineering talent, and executing projects on fast-paced timelines.
You will collaborate with internal and external development teams (architecture, firmware, hardware, validation, software services, vendors). You will establish strategic vision and drive tactical execution in defining and delivering new products and services. What you will do: You will build and lead a team designing and building transformative AWS-specific hardware, firmware and software for non-volatile memory based storage solutions, including NAND-based SSDs. You will deliver scalable storage solutions and associated operational infrastructure to automate monitoring and analysis services. You will work closely with other AWS software teams to tailor and operate storage solutions for the AWS environment.

Key job responsibilities
- Work backward from customer input and storage product requirements to plan and build SSD development roadmap
- Work with external vendors and partner teams to collaborate on firmware development
- Deliver using Agile/Scrum development methodology and software development practices
- Drive innovation on architecture and feature design details
- Work closely with Hardware, Software, Firmware, validation teams, to drive product integration
- Build at-scale operational excellence into product development and deployment practices
- Hire, mentor and grow the organization to deliver the product roadmap

About the team
Nitro SSD is the fastest growing NAND flash-memory based storage solution for AWS. The 3rd generation Nitro SSD is now available for AWS customers on both Intel and Graviton storage platforms. This is the latest milestone in the AWS Nitro SSD strategy. We deliver industry leading performance and tail latency, while offering a cost competitive, high density storage solution for AWS customers. We own ALL the firmware, hardware, software and telemetry/monitoring for ALL the devices in the fleet. We partner will global NAND vendors, SoC vendors and manufacturing partners to drive the full product-lifecycle for Nitro SSD.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- 5+ years of designing or architecting (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience
- 7+ years of working directly within engineering teams experience
- Knowledge of engineering practices and patterns for the full software/hardware/networks development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, certification, and livesite operations
- Experience partnering with product or program management teams
- 3+ years of engineering team management experience
- 3+ years of engineering team management for embedded software experience
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience in recruiting, hiring, mentoring/coaching and managing teams of Software Engineers to improve their skills, and make them more effective, product software engineers
- Experience in communicating with users, other technical teams, and senior leadership to collect requirements, describe software product features, technical designs, and product strategy
- Experience using English communication skills, both written and verbal, to foster seamless interaction with stakeholders at all levels
- Hands-on experience with SSD based storage systems, including Flash Translation Layer, NAND interface layer development
- Hands on experience with one or more of the following protocol stacks including block storage (NVMe, SAS/SATA), networking (Ethernet, TCP/IP) and interface (PCIe, USB, I2C).
The base salary range for this position is listed below. Your Amazon package will include sign-on payments and restricted stock units (RSUs). Final compensation will be determined based on factors including experience, qualifications, and location.
