Position Summary

The Social Work Practitioner will function as a consultant to county child welfare agencies. This position will provide guidance and oversight to all 100 counties in the management of high-risk child welfare cases which overlap with medical issues. The SW Practitioner will be involved with reviewing and consulting to counties during CPS assessment. The team functions 24/7/365 and as such, all Social Work Practitioners will participate in the on-call structure, a critical and required function of the role. The SW Practitioner will oversee the following types of cases as defined by NC DHHS Child Welfare Policy for CPS Assessments.

Currently this includes:
  • Injuries in young children under 3 years.
  • Children under 3 years with concerns for STI.
  • Children under 3 years where another child in the home has died as a result of suspected maltreatment
  • All children with a suspicion of medical child abuse/Munchausen by Proxy
  • Cases involving children with medical complexity as defined by NC DHHS Child Welfare CPS Assessment Policy.


Additionally, this position will participate in the development of educational materials and policy suggestions under the guidance of the supervisor. This position will provide training medical aspects to child welfare with rostered CME clinician. Finally, this position will NOT be available to testify in court, nor participate in meetings with the families being investigated by child welfare. Instead, this position supports the knowledge and skill development of the county CPS child welfare supervisor to assist in supporting understanding of NC DHHS child welfare state policy. They are supervised by a senior social worker on the team. As this is a contracted service for NC DHHS child welfare, they are under the ultimate supervision of NC DHHS child welfare.

Please note, this position is not related to and does not work with UNC Hospitals.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelor's degree in a Human Services discipline with coursework related to the area of assignment. Some positions may require certification to practice as a certified or licensed Clinical Social Worker as required by the North Carolina Social Work Certification Board.

Management Preferences
  • Experience with CPS child welfare assessment in North Carolina.
  • Experience managing child welfare serious injury/sexual abuse cases.
  • NC pre-service training preferred.
