Position Summary The DevOps Engineer is responsible for designing, building, and operating the continuous integration and delivery pipelines, infrastructure automation, and platform tooling that power Subway's technology organization. This role plays a critical part in enabling engineering teams to ship software faster, more reliably, and with greater confidence - while maintaining the security, stability, and scalability of shared delivery infrastructure.
The DevOps Engineer brings a strong automation-first mindset and hands-on proficiency with modern CI/CD tooling, infrastructure-as-code, and cloud platforms. Critically, this role is expected to actively leverage AI-powered tools and intelligent automation to accelerate delivery pipelines, reduce toil, improve system observability, and drive continuous improvement across the software delivery lifecycle.
Essential Functions CI/CD Pipeline Development & Optimization - Design, build, and maintain CI/CD pipelines that support rapid, reliable, and repeatable software delivery across multiple engineering teams
- Automate build, test, packaging, and deployment workflows to minimize manual effort and human error
- Integrate AI-assisted code quality, security scanning, and test coverage tools into pipeline stages to shift quality left
- Monitor pipeline performance and health; identify and resolve bottlenecks that slow delivery velocity
- Establish and enforce pipeline standards, branching strategies, and deployment patterns across the engineering organization
Infrastructure as Code & Cloud Automation - Develop and maintain infrastructure-as-code (IaC) solutions using Terraform and related tooling to provision, configure, and manage cloud and on-premises environments
- Automate infrastructure lifecycle management - provisioning, scaling, patching, and decommissioning - to reduce manual operations overhead
- Partner with Cloud Engineering to ensure IaC modules meet architecture, security, and cost governance standards
- Leverage AI-assisted code generation and IaC validation tools to improve accuracy, consistency, and speed of infrastructure development
- Maintain version-controlled infrastructure repositories with clear documentation and reusable module libraries
AI & Intelligent Automation - Actively identify and implement AI-powered tooling to automate repetitive DevOps tasks, including incident triage, change management, and environment provisioning
- Leverage AI-assisted anomaly detection and predictive alerting to proactively surface issues before they impact delivery or production systems
- Evaluate and integrate emerging AI developer tools - including AI coding assistants, automated testing frameworks, and intelligent observability platforms - into the DevOps toolchain
- Contribute to the organization's AI adoption journey by piloting new automation capabilities and documenting outcomes and best practices
- Promote an automation-first culture within the engineering organization by sharing tools, patterns, and results with peers and stakeholders
- Monitor cluster health, resource utilization, and workload performance; implement optimizations as needed
Platform Reliability & Incident Management - Monitor DevOps platform health, CI/CD infrastructure, and shared tooling to maintain high availability and performance
- Respond to and resolve incidents affecting delivery pipelines, build infrastructure, or automation frameworks
- Conduct root cause analysis on pipeline failures, environment issues, and recurring incidents; implement permanent fixes
- Develop runbooks, playbooks, and self-healing automation to reduce mean time to recovery and minimize manual intervention
- Partner with Cloud Engineering and Observability teams to ensure end-to-end visibility across the delivery pipeline and supporting infrastructure
DevSecOps & Compliance - Embed security practices throughout the CI/CD pipeline - including static code analysis, dependency scanning, secrets management, and image scanning
- Partner with the Cyber Security team to ensure pipelines and automation frameworks meet enterprise security and compliance standards
- Implement least-privilege access controls, audit logging, and policy-as-code across DevOps tooling and infrastructure
- Support vulnerability remediation workflows by integrating security findings into developer feedback loops
Collaboration & Engineering Enablement - Partner closely with application development, cloud engineering, and platform teams to understand delivery needs and continuously improve the DevOps toolchain
- Provide technical guidance, documentation, and training to engineering teams on CI/CD best practices, automation patterns, and DevOps tooling
- Participate in architecture reviews, sprint planning, and engineering discussions to contribute a DevOps and automation perspective
- Share knowledge proactively - document patterns, publish runbooks, and contribute to the broader engineering community of practice
Skills and Abilities Required - Strong hands-on experience with CI/CD platforms (e.g., GitHub Actions, Azure DevOps, Jenkins, or equivalent)
- Proficiency with infrastructure-as-code tools, particularly Terraform (required)
- Demonstrated use of AI-powered developer tools and automation frameworks in a DevOps or engineering context
- Solid understanding of cloud platforms (AWS and/or Azure); experience with multi-cloud environments a plus
- Familiarity with scripting and automation languages such as Python, Bash, or PowerShell
- Working knowledge of DevSecOps practices, including secrets management, vulnerability scanning, and policy-as-code
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a bias toward automation and elimination of toil
- Effective communicator - able to explain technical concepts clearly to engineering peers and non-technical stakeholders
Education - Bachelor's degree required (Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or related field)
- Relevant certifications preferred (e.g., AWS/Azure DevOps, CKA/CKAD, HashiCorp Terraform Associate)
Experience - 4-7 years of hands-on DevOps, platform engineering, or site reliability engineering experience
- 3+ years building and maintaining CI/CD pipelines in an enterprise or cloud-native environment
- 3+ years writing and managing Terraform modules for cloud or hybrid infrastructure
- Demonstrated experience applying AI or automation tools to improve DevOps workflows, pipeline efficiency, or incident response
- Experience working in an Agile delivery environment with cross-functional engineering teams
