Job Description:
The Department Supervisor is responsible for training, leading, and motivating a team of service technicians. This role fosters a 5S-oriented culture with a strong focus on safe, compliant, and efficient daily operations. To ensure production and customer service needs are met, the Supervisor manages shop workflow, monitors operational processes, meets department goals, and supports the Service Manager with both shop and mobile operations. Additionally, this is a working supervisor role that provides hands-on technical support when needed while serving as the Service Manager's backup for daily operations.
Salary Range: $89k-$92k
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Operational Oversight: Manages shop and field service workflows, including work order scheduling, technician utilization, and job completion. Directs team members and provides technical guidance across heavy-duty truck systems, welding, electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems.
- Revenue and Customer Relations: Drives department revenue, labor productivity, and overall operational efficiency. Manages customer escalations and service recovery initiatives to ensure high satisfaction and retention. Oversees the end-to-end work order process—from initiation through invoicing—to optimize billing cycles and cash collection.
- Personnel Management: Holds formal managerial authority within the organizational structure. Responsible for key personnel actions, including hiring, training, performance evaluations, timecard management, and policy enforcement. Actively addresses employee complaints and resolves workplace issues. Leads the development and coaching of technicians to focus on safety, technical proficiency, productivity, and professional growth.
- Safety & EHS Compliance: Maintains a safe department at all times. Ensures proper training, correct PPE usage, thorough documentation, and corrective action. Stops work immediately if any non-compliance is observed.
- Incident Reporting: Immediately report all accidents and near-miss incidents to the Service/Plant Manager and EHS personnel. Actively participates in investigative and prevention activities to ensure incidents do not recur.
- Technical Support: Diagnose and repair complex mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic issues; apply welding and fabrication skills to maintain and repair equipment; and provide technical training and support to technicians.
- Field Operations: Directs mobile service operations by coordinating technician scheduling, route planning, fleet readiness, and field productivity. Manages the dispatch of the mobile service team in company vehicles for on-site repairs, ensuring full compliance with service and safety standards.
- 5-S Culture & Continuous Improvement: Ensures 5-S practices are maintained in assigned areas. Leads the department in continuous improvement by identifying and encouraging others to find optimization opportunities in their daily tasks.
- Administration: Maintains accurate service, time, and production records. Complete all required reporting on schedule. Performs other duties as assigned by management.
Education and/or Work Experience Requirements:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Proven supervisory or leadership experience in a service, manufacturing, or heavy equipment environment.
- Strong mechanical aptitude with hands-on experience working on commercial trash compactors, balers, or similar hydraulic, electrical, and mechanical systems.
- Strong welding and fabrication skills.
- Proficient computer skills (experience with enterprise HR and service platforms preferred).
- Strong mathematical skills, including proficiency with standard tape measures, fractions, and decimals.
- Strong multitasking, troubleshooting, and organizational skills.
Certifications (Preferred but not required):- OSHA 10 Certification
- Forklift Operator Certification
- CPR/First Aid Certification
Language Requirements:- Must be fluent in English (speaking, reading, and writing) with excellent communication and customer service skills.
- Bilingual English/Spanish is strongly preferred
Physical and Work Environment Requirements:
- Must be able to walk and stand frequently on the shop floor.
- Must be able to sit frequently for administrative duties.
- Must be able to push, pull, and occasionally lift more than 50 lbs.
- Moderate exposure to industrial noise, dust, and varying shop temperatures.
