Northrop Grumman Defense Systems is seeking an Staff Systems - Nuclear Harness & Survivability (NH&S) Engineer (T05 level), . This position is located in Roy, Utah and supports the Sentinel program.

Primary responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Lead software-focused systems engineering activities for the SLCM-N program during the Technology Maturation and Risk Reduction (TMRR) phase, ensuring alignment with program technical, cost, and schedule objectives
  • Perform technical planning, requirements decomposition, allocation, and interface definition for software and software-intensive subsystems, ensuring logical and systematic conversion of customer requirements into implementable software specifications
  • Define and assess nuclear hardness and survivability (NH&S) environments and requirements, and flow those requirements into software, firmware, and hardware/software interface designs
  • Conduct radiation transport modeling and simulation and support analysis of radiation effects on semiconductor devices and software-controlled electronics (e.g., TID, NDD, dose-rate, SEE) to inform architecture and design trades
  • Perform radiation effects circuit analysis, ground shock and thermal effects analysis, and evaluate electromagnetic pulse (EMP/EMI/EMC) impacts on electronics and software-controlled systems
  • Plan, coordinate, and support NH&S and EEE parts qualification testing (e.g., per MIL-STD-750, MIL-STD-883, MIL-STD-464 or similar), including test definition, procedures, data review, and results analysis for semiconductors and SLCM-N systems, subsystems, and equipment
  • Lead and participate in NH&S design reviews and software-focused systems design reviews for survivable systems, driving closure of actions and ensuring robust verification and validation approaches
  • Coordinate vertically and horizontally across multidisciplinary engineering teams (systems, software, hardware, EEE, radiation effects, test) and customer/stakeholder organizations to resolve complex technical issues
  • Perform detailed trade studies, modeling, and analysis (including use of scripting tools such as MATLAB or Python and circuit modeling tools such as PSPICE) to evaluate and optimize survivability, performance, and implementation options
  • Serve as a technical leader and subject matter expert on NH&S systems engineering for cruise missile applications, advising management and customers on advanced technical concepts, research, and applications


Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) discipline from an accredited university and 12 years of relevant experience, OR a Masters degree and 10 years of relevant experience, OR a PhD and 8 years of relevant experience
  • Must be a US Citizen with an active U.S. Government Secret Clearance, at time of application, current and within scope, with an investigation date within the last 6 years
  • Must have the ability to obtain and maintain Top Secret Clearance and Special Access Program (SAP) approval within a reasonable period of time, as determined by the company to meet its business needs
  • Experience conducting NH&S design reviews for survivable or strategic weapon systems, including translation of nuclear effects environments into system and software requirements
  • Experience with MIL-STD-750, MIL-STD-464, MIL-STD-883 testing or similar qualification/verification testing of EEE parts, circuit card assemblies, or subsystems
  • Working knowledge of nuclear weapons effects and associated testing (e.g., TID, NDD, dose-rate, SEE, EMP/EMI/EMC) and their impact on electronics and software-controlled systems
  • Proficiency with scripting or high-level programming languages (e.g., MATLAB, Python) for data analysis, modeling, or automation, and experience modeling semiconductor radiation effects using tools such as PSPICE or similar


Preferred Qualifications

  • Active DoD Top Secret Clearance
  • Masters degree in electrical engineering, nuclear engineering, or a closely related STEM discipline from an accredited institution
  • Experience in embedded hardware and software qualification testing for circuit card assemblies and subassemblies, including requirements verification, test procedure development, and defect/issue resolution
  • Familiarity with applicable military standards relevant to survivable systems and electronics (e.g., MIL-STD-1766C, MIL-STD-461, and related NH&S/EMI/EMC/qualification standards)
  • Experience with radiation shielding design to protect against photons and/or neutrons, including verification modeling using tools such as MCNP or GEANT4
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate complex technical concepts in written and verbal form, prioritize and manage time to execute to program schedules, and prior experience supporting cruise missile or similar weapon systems

This position's standard work schedule is a 9/80. The 9/80 schedule allows employees who work a nine-hour day Monday through Thursday to take every other Friday off.

This role may offer a competitive relocation assistance package.

Primary Level Salary Range: $152,900.00 - $229,300.00

The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.

Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
