Responsibilities

Duties of the Senior Water Resources Scientist will include the following:
  • Hydrography: contribute to the development, evaluation, and improvement of hydrography datasets and surface-water network representations.
  • Hydrologic modeling: build, calibrate, run, and evaluate hydrologic models, with emphasis on ecological flows and streamflow behavior.
  • Rules & decision logic: help design and refine the rules and analytical logic that translate data and model output into clear, defensible results.
  • Scientific coding: develop well-documented, reproducible scientific analysis, primarily in R.
  • Writing & communication: write clearly and rigorously for technical reports, publications, and proposals.
  • Technical leadership: set technical direction across workstreams, review and strengthen colleagues' work, and mentor team members as a senior collaborator across the Science, Modeling, and Platform teams.


Qualifications

The Senior Water Resources Scientist selected should have the following:
  • PhD in watershed science, hydrology, water resources, environmental or earth science, or a closely related field; or a Master's plus substantial relevant experience (roughly 6+ years).
  • Demonstrated experience building, calibrating, running, and evaluating hydrologic models.
  • Strong scientific coding skills in R, with reproducible-research practices (e.g., Git, R Markdown, or Quarto).
  • Strong scientific writing ability, evidenced by a record of technical writing or peer-reviewed publication.
  • Ability to work independently and move fluidly across multiple concurrent workstreams.


The Ideal Senior Water Resources Scientist will have the following:
  • Experience with hydrography datasets and surface-water network representation.
  • Experience with ecological flows and streamflow or performance-oriented flow modeling.
  • A strong peer-reviewed publication record.
  • A track record of successful proposal development and funding wins.
  • Familiarity with additional languages such as Python or JavaScript, and with geospatial and remote-sensing tooling.
