This is a hybrid position requiring 3 days in office at our Hartford, CT office location. **Candidates may also be considered for a Team Lead role depending on experience and qualifications.**#LI-Hybrid

CapSpecialty is seeking a Senior Underwriter for our Small Business Casualty team who will help launch and scale a newly established small business unit focused on high-growth casualty segments, leveraging innovative technology developed within the organization. This role offers a unique opportunity to build a portfolio from the ground up, shape underwriting strategy and product development, and mentor a team of underwriters. The position is responsible for driving profitable growth through disciplined underwriting, innovative thinking, and strong broker partnerships, while contributing to the development of a market-leading small commercial offering.

Duties/Responsibilities:
  • Partner with leadership to define underwriting appetite, pricing strategy, and go-to-market approach, playing a key role in shaping the vision and long-term success of a new small business unit.
  • Collaborate with IT leaders to advance technology solutions that enhance efficiency and support the underwiritng of the product.
  • Support the recruitment, onboarding, and mentorship of a team of underwriters, establishing best practices, referral frameworks, and a high-performance, collaborative culture.
  • Play a central role in the development of underwriting guidelines, applications, workflows, and coverage enhancements, helping build a market-leading product from the ground up.
  • Establish and strengthen relationships with key broker partners to drive submission flow, enhance market presence, and accelerate profitable growth.
  • Proactively identify new business opportunities through broker engagement, outreach, and market intelligence within targeted segments.
  • Provide ongoing feedback to leadership on market conditions, competitive dynamics, and emerging trends to inform strategy and product evolution.
  • Underwrite new business across targeted segments, applying sound judgment to build a profitable and scalable portfolio.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally (claims, actuarial, operations, product) to resolve issues, enhance processes, and improve overall portfolio performance.
  • Deliver a high level of service to brokers and internal stakeholders by maintaining responsiveness, meeting service level expectations, and resolving inquiries efficiently.
  • Maintain a strong understanding of product offerings, pricing, and coverage forms, and effectively communicate terms and underwriting decisions.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Provide indirect supervision, guidance, and mentorship to team members.

Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor's Degree, or equivalent.
  • 5+ years of general liability underwriting experience with an Excess & Surplus carrier and prefer candidates with existing wholesale producer relationships.
  • Completion or continuing work towards industry certification (i.e. CIC, IIA, CPCU) is preferred and encouraged.

Physical Demands:
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • May be required to lift up to 15 lbs at times.
  • Customary business travel, including air and car travel, may be required.
