Senior Underwriter - North America Casualty Reinsurance Job Profile: Senior Underwriter, Reinsurance How does this role contribute to our collective success? Reporting to the Head of North America GL and WC Casualty, AXIS Re, the successful candidate will be responsible for underwriting and managing a portfolio of General Liability and Workers Compensation Treaty Reinsurance business across North America. The role carries significant responsibility for business production, portfolio performance, broker and client relationship management, underwriting strategy execution and portfolio management. The successful candidate will work closely with Casualty leadership to identify growth opportunities, support portfolio construction, manage market cycle dynamics and contribute to broader casualty initiatives. In addition to their core General Liability and Workers Compensation responsibilities, the individual will have opportunities to contribute across other casualty lines, including Professional Liability and Cyber, supporting a diversified underwriting platform and long-term talent development objectives. What will you do in this role?  Originate, negotiate and underwrite General Liability and Workers Compensation treaty reinsurance business in compliance with AXIS Re underwriting guidelines, authority, risk appetite and portfolio objectives.  Manage and grow a portfolio of business with accountability for underwriting performance, profitability and portfolio quality.  Support the development and execution of underwriting strategy, business plans, portfolio construction initiatives and market engagement efforts.  Build, maintain and expand broker and client relationships to support profitable business origination and long-term franchise value.  Lead complex underwriting analyses and develop creative and effective reinsurance solutions that balance client needs with AXIS Re profitability objectives.  Monitor portfolio performance and proactively identify emerging opportunities, trends and risks.  Track legal, regulatory, economic and market developments affecting casualty lines and incorporate insights into underwriting decision-making.  Participate in strategic discussions with brokers and clients regarding portfolio performance, market developments and emerging risk issues.  Participate in underwriting audits, peer reviews, referral discussions and portfolio monitoring activities.  Mentor and support the development of less experienced underwriting professionals.  Collaborate closely with actuarial, claims, finance, operations and exposure management teams to support effective portfolio management and business decision making.  Support underwriting initiatives across other casualty portfolios, including Professional Liability, where appropriate.  Maintain a strong understanding of current issues affecting the insurance and reinsurance industries with respect to General Liability, Workers Compensation and broader casualty markets.  Travel frequently to service clients and brokers and attend industry conferences. You may also be required to take on additional duties, responsibilities and activities appropriate to the nature of this role. About You The successful candidate will be a highly regarded casualty reinsurance professional with a demonstrated track record of underwriting and managing profitable General Liability and Workers Compensation portfolios within a leading reinsurance, insurance or brokerage organization. The individual will possess strong technical underwriting expertise combined with portfolio management, relationship management and business development capabilities. They will be comfortable engaging with senior client executives, brokers and internal stakeholders while contributing to portfolio management and strategic underwriting discussions. Candidates should demonstrate the ability to balance underwriting judgment, portfolio management, client advocacy and commercial execution within a dynamic and evolving market environment. What you need to have  Strong expertise in General Liability and Workers Compensation insurance and reinsurance markets.  Demonstrated track record of profitable underwriting and portfolio management.  Experience managing treaty reinsurance portfolios and contributing to underwriting strategy and business planning.  Strong understanding of casualty loss trends, claims dynamics, policy coverage, treaty structures and emerging risks.  Working knowledge of actuarial, pricing and portfolio management concepts.  Ability to communicate technical underwriting concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences, including Executive Leadership.  Strong communication, negotiation and influencing skills.  Proven ability to develop and maintain productive broker, client and internal stakeholder relationships.  Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities.  Sound judgment and decision-making skills when faced with ambiguity and competing priorities.  Strong understanding of contract wording, policy forms and underwriting governance principles.  Excellent organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities during peak renewal periods.  Highly collaborative with the ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.  Ability to lead projects and influence outcomes across functions.  Bachelors Degree in a relevant discipline or equivalent professional experience. What we prefer you to have  CPCU, ARe, ARM or other relevant industry designation.  Based in the New York metropolitan area.  Minimum 8 years of casualty insurance or reinsurance underwriting and/or broking experience.  Significant experience in General Liability and Workers Compensation underwriting.  Experience working across multiple casualty classes, including Professional Liability and other specialty casualty lines.  Strong industry relationships and reputation among leading brokers and insurers.  Demonstrated portfolio management and business planning experience.  Experience mentoring and developing junior underwriting talent.  Ability to build dashboards and data models using Power BI.  Strong Excel skills, including pivot tables, lookups and data analysis. Role Factors In this role, you will typically be required to:  Travel frequently to visit clients, brokers and attend industry conferences.  Be in the office (or visiting brokers/clients) three days per week.  Attend broker and client events in the evenings and occasionally on weekends as required. Your salary offer will be based on an assessment of a variety of factors including your specific experience and work location.
