Description

The Senior Underwriter plays an important role in supporting financial analysis and underwriting for large group commercial customers across Fully Insured and Self Insured products. In this position, you will apply underwriting principles and analytical skills to assess risk, develop pricing recommendations, and project future costs for both new business and renewal opportunities.

This role partners closely with Sales and Account Management to support growth and retention strategies by providing sound financial analysis, competitive pricing recommendations, and clear underwriting rationale. The Senior Underwriter is expected to manage assigned accounts independently while continuing to develop expertise in underwriting, pricing, and risk assessment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Underwrite assigned large group commercial business opportunities across Fully Insured and Self Insured products, including both new business and renewals.
  • Analyze group census data, historical claims experience, and utilization trends to evaluate risk and project future claim costs.
  • Develop underwriting recommendations and pricing solutions that align with Medica's financial goals and market competitiveness.
  • Collaborate with Sales and Account Management partners to support customer retention and growth opportunities.
  • Clearly communicate underwriting assumptions, risks, and recommendations to internal stakeholders.
  • Apply sound judgment when evaluating risk and pricing scenarios while seeking guidance on highly complex situations as appropriate.
  • Maintain knowledge of underwriting practices, competitive market trends, and regulatory considerations impacting commercial health insurance.
  • Contribute to team initiatives, process improvements, and department objectives.


Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 3+ years of professional experience in underwriting or a related field.
  • Healthcare insurance underwriting experience.
  • Experience underwriting commercial group business.
  • Experience analyzing claims and experience reporting to assess risk and project future claim costs.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret data and develop actionable insights.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience underwriting both Fully Insured and Self Insured commercial group business.
  • Experience supporting Medical and Pharmacy (Rx) RFPs.
  • Knowledge of self insured funding arrangements, stop loss concepts, and plan design evaluation.
  • Experience partnering with Sales and Account Management teams.
  • Pharmacy RFP experience preferred.
  • Experience working with claims and experience reporting to project future risk.

This position is an Office role, which requires an employee to work onsite at our Minnetonka, MN office, on average, 3 days per week.

The full salary grade for this position is $70,200 - $120,400. While the full salary grade is provided, the typical hiring salary range for this role is expected to be between $70,200 - $105,315. Annual salary range placement will depend on a variety of factors including, but not limited to, education, work experience, applicable certifications and/or licensure, the position's scope and responsibility, internal pay equity and external market salary data. In addition to base compensation, this position may be eligible for incentive plan compensation in addition to base salary.
