Senior Technical Writer (P3) - Linux
Location: Kanata, ON

YOUR ROLE

As a Senior Technical Writer on our team, you will collaborate with software engineers, fellow writers, product managers, and documentation tools specialists to develop high-quality documentation that supports the adoption of Wind River’s enterprise Linux offerings.

Wind River Linux and eLxr are critical components of our Enterprise portfolio, enabling customers to build, deploy, and maintain secure, scalable, and high-performance Linux-based systems. These products require deep technical understanding to document effectively. This role requires a writer with strong, hands-on Linux expertise who can confidently work with complex system-level concepts and contribute at a technical depth comparable to engineering teams.

We are seeking a Senior Technical Writer who is not just experienced in documentation, but  as a Linux subject matter expert within the documentation team, helping to elevate the overall quality and technical accuracy of our content.

HOW YOU WILL CONTRIBUTE

In your daily work, you will:

Collaborate with Wind River engineers and product managers to create and maintain documentation for WindRiver Linux and eLxr.

• Collaborate with engineers and product managers to document Wind River Linux and eLxr, translating complex Linux system functionality into clear, actionable guidance.

• Develop and maintain deeply technical, task-oriented documentation covering installation, configuration, customization, and troubleshooting of Linux-based systems.

• Work directly with Linux environments to validate procedures, reproduce workflows, and ensure accuracy of documentation.

• Author, structure, and maintain content in a DITA-based CCMS (e.g., Ixiasoft), ensuring modular, reusable, and consistent documentation.

• Author, structure, and maintain content in a Git repository using restructured text and Sphinx, ensuring consistency with existing documentation structure and formatting.

• Adapt and integrate open-source/Linux upstream content into Wind River documentation where appropriate.

• Align documentation with agile release cycles, ensuring readiness for product deliveries.

• Engage with SMEs, participate in technical reviews, and incorporate feedback from globally distributed teams.

• Act as a technical bridge between engineering and documentation, strengthening Linux capability across the writing team.

• Collaborate with globally distributed teams of engineers and writers to deliver consistent, high-quality documentation.

Required Qualifications
This role plays a key part in enabling the success of Wind River’s Enterprise Linux offerings by ensuring customers can effectively adopt, deploy, and operate our products through high-quality documentation.

• Minimum 5 years of technical writing experience in software, systems, or infrastructure domains.

• Strong, hands-on Linux experience is mandatory (e.g., system administration, kernel concepts, package management, services, networking, troubleshooting).

• Proven ability to understand and document complex Linux-based systems at a deep technical level.
• Exposure to AI-assisted documentation tools, including LLMs or RAG systems and Kiro.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.

• Experience working in a structured authoring environment using DITA (e.g., Ixiasoft CMS or similar CCMS).

• Experience with docs-as-code workflows (Git, CI/CD) alongside DITA-based systems.

• Experience with Sphinx and authoring with restructured text

• Familiarity with content lifecycle management, reuse strategies, and modular documentation design.

• Knowledge of container-based deployment including Docker and Kubernetes

• Comfortable working in version-controlled and collaborative environments.

• Ability to independently validate technical content and work closely with engineering teams.

• Experience working in an agile development environment


Preferred Qualifications

• Experience documenting enterprise Linux platforms or embedded Linux systems.

• Familiarity with Yocto Project, custom Linux builds, or system integration workflows.

• Experience working with open-source Linux ecosystems and upstream documentation.

• Background in system administration, DevOps, or software development on Linux.

• Knowledge of documentation UX, information architecture, and accessibility standards.

Compensation

This role is compensation range is between $72,000 to $90,000 CAD plus annual incentive plan bonus. Compensation is determined through interviews and a review of the education, experience, knowledge, skills, location, and abilities of the applicant, and equity with other team members.
