Position Summary

The Senior Tax Manager will play a key role in building and scaling Southland Industries' corporate tax function to support the organization's continued growth. This position will serve as a broad tax leader and trusted advisor to the business, providing oversight across a variety of tax matters while bringing subject matter expertise in one or more specialized areas of taxation.

Working closely with Finance leadership, business stakeholders, and external tax advisors, the Senior Tax Manager will provide strategic and hands-on support across tax planning, compliance, risk management, and business expansion. This role will help establish scalable tax processes and capabilities while advising the business on the tax implications of entering new markets and pursuing growth opportunities.

Position Details
  • Lead the development and continued maturation of Southland's corporate tax function, establishing scalable processes, controls, and best practices to support organizational growth.
  • Provide oversight and guidance across a broad range of federal, state, and local tax matters, including income tax, sales and use tax, property tax, payroll tax, and other state and local tax requirements.
  • Lead and coordinate tax compliance activities in partnership with internal Finance teams and external tax advisors, ensuring accurate and timely filings, payments, reporting, and documentation.
  • Serve as a strategic tax advisor to Finance and business leadership, providing guidance on the tax implications of business initiatives, operational decisions, and organizational growth.
  • Evaluate tax requirements associated with expansion into new markets and jurisdictions, including registrations, compliance obligations, tax exposure, and available incentives.
  • Monitor changes in federal, state, and local tax laws and regulations and proactively assess potential impacts to the organization.
  • Manage relationships with external tax advisors and maintain a strong network of specialized tax resources to address complex or highly technical matters as needed.
  • Lead and support tax audits, notices, inquiries, and other matters involving federal, state, and local taxing authorities.
  • Identify opportunities to strengthen tax controls, mitigate risk, improve processes, and increase operational efficiency.
  • Evaluate opportunities to bring additional tax activities and capabilities in-house as the organization and tax function continue to mature.
  • Partner cross-functionally with Finance and other business stakeholders to ensure tax considerations are incorporated into business planning and decision-making.
  • Establish the foundation for a future internal tax team, including assessing resource, technology, and capability needs as the function grows.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Taxation, or a related field required.
  • Minimum of 8-10 years of progressive tax experience within corporate tax, public accounting, or a combination of both.
  • Broad corporate tax experience with demonstrated exposure to multiple areas of taxation, including federal and state income tax and state and local tax matters.
  • Demonstrated subject matter expertise in one or more areas of taxation, such as income tax, sales and use tax, property tax, payroll tax, or other state and local taxes.
  • Experience supporting a complex, multi-state organization and navigating tax requirements across multiple jurisdictions.
  • Experience advising business or Finance leadership on tax implications associated with business growth, new markets, or strategic initiatives.
  • Experience managing external accounting, tax, or advisory firms and coordinating complex tax matters with specialized resources.
  • Experience developing, improving, or scaling corporate tax processes, controls, or functions strongly preferred.
  • CPA, Master of Taxation (MST), or other relevant advanced degree or professional certification preferred.
  • Advanced knowledge of federal, state, and local tax laws, regulations, compliance requirements, and reporting obligations.
  • Broad understanding of corporate taxation with the ability to recognize tax risks, opportunities, and situations requiring specialized expertise.
  • Strong business and financial acumen with the ability to evaluate tax considerations within the context of broader organizational objectives.
  • Ability to serve as a trusted advisor to senior leaders and translate complex tax matters into clear, practical business recommendations.
  • Strong analytical, research, and problem-solving skills with the ability to interpret and apply complex tax regulations.
  • Ability to build structure and establish scalable processes within a growing and evolving environment.
  • Strong project management and organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities, deadlines, and workstreams.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to build effective relationships across Finance, business leadership, and external partners.
  • Ability to operate independently, exercise sound judgment, and take ownership of complex tax matters through resolution.
  • Ability to identify and implement opportunities for process improvement, risk mitigation, and increased efficiency.
  • High level of accuracy, attention to detail, and commitment to maintaining effective documentation and controls.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise discretion when handling sensitive financial and business information.
