Job Description
Role Type
Hybrid: This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to either the Milford Proving Grounds OR the Global Technical Center three (3) times per week, at minimum.
The Role
Join the innovative and high‑impact Planar Motion Coordination team within Global Systems Engineering, Safety, and Validation as a Senior System and System Safety Engineer. Our team defines and delivers the Vehicle Dynamics State Estimation and Vehicle Dynamics Motion Control systems that shape how every GM vehicle performs on the road.
In this multi-disciplined role, you will own the Vehicle Dynamics State Estimation (VDSE) System functional safety deliverables and support system design and requirement definition. VDSE is a foundational technology that fuses sensor data to calculate the vehicle’s dynamic state (reference velocity, accelerations, tire forces, and more), even in the presence of faults. This system enables a wide range of advanced control features across GM’s global portfolio. Your work will directly impact vehicle safety and support GM’s vision of Zero Crashes, Zero Emissions, and Zero Congestion.
What You’ll Do
● Lead the definition and completion of the VDSE system safety case for GM vehicle programs.
● Define functional and performance requirements in collaboration with cross‑functional engineering and product teams.
● Employ varied analysis techniques including hazard analysis, fault tree analysis, interface analysis, failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA), and more.
● Support execution of new requirements and cascading roll‑down to impacted organizations, ensuring alignment and traceability.
● Guide confirmation of requirements through analysis, simulation, and physical testing (including HIL benches and vehicles).
● Utilize model-based systems engineering techniques to improve traceability, design quality, and variant management.
● Serve as the corporation’s subject matter expert for VDSE, influencing technology direction, integration strategies, and issue resolution.
What You’ll Need (Required Qualifications)
● Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Mathematics, Computer Science, Physics or related field of study.
● 5+ years of relevant engineering experience, ideally in systems engineering or functional safety.
● Experience developing or integrating embedded control systems.
● Familiarity with ISO 26262 or other functional safety standards such as IEC 61508, IEC 62304, or DO-178C.
● Valid driver’s license with the ability to operate test vehicles as required.
What Will Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)
● Experience in developing vehicle dynamics related products such as braking, steering, suspension, etc.
● Experience developing vehicle dynamics state estimation systems, controls architecture, or software.
● Experience owning an automotive functional safety case through a complete lifecycle.
● Understanding of distributed and networked real‑time control systems.

This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the selected candidate is expected to report to a specific location at least 3 times a week {or other frequency dictated by their manager}.
The selected candidate will be required to travel <25% for this role.
This job is not eligible for relocation benefits. Any relocation costs would be the responsibility of the selected candidate.
This position requires the ability to legally operate a motor vehicle on a regular basis and successfully complete a Motor Vehicle Report review.
