Full Job Description
What You Will Do:

We are seeking a Senior Structural Engineer to join our team in Charlotte, NC to lead the design and delivery of structural projects across a variety of industries, including manufacturing, industrial, commercial, distribution, education, public sector, and adaptive reuse developments. In this role, you'll provide technical and project leadership, mentor engineering staff, collaborate with clients and multidisciplinary teams, and oversee projects from concept through construction. You'll also play an active role in business development, client management, and expanding our presence in key markets while helping maintain the high-quality engineering solutions Bennett & Pless is known for. This position offers opportunities for continued professional growth, increased leadership responsibility, and a meaningful role in the continued success of our Charlotte team.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead the design and analysis of structural systems for new construction, renovation, and adaptive reuse projects across multiple market sectors.
  • Oversee project delivery, ensuring compliance with applicable codes, client requirements, and company QA/QC standards.
  • Prepare and review structural calculations, drawings, specifications, and technical reports.
  • Coordinate with clients, architects, contractors, and multidisciplinary teams throughout all project phases.
  • Perform site visits, structural assessments, investigations, and construction milestone reviews.
  • Develop cost-effective engineering solutions, respond to RFIs, and support construction administration activities.
  • Mentor and oversee junior engineers and designers, providing technical guidance and quality reviews.
  • Support business development efforts through proposal


What We Are Looking For:

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil/Structural Engineering required, Master's degree preferred.
  • Active Professional Engineer license. SE licensure is a plus
  • 15+ years' experience required in structural engineering.
  • People management experience
  • Experience should include steel and concrete design in low to mid-rise structures with shallow foundation systems. Masonry, deep foundation, and wood design is a plus
  • High wind and seismic region experience
  • Project management experience/ability
  • Experience with industry standard software, including but not limited to Microsoft products, Revit, RISA, Bentley (RAM) products, EnerCalc, etc.
  • Strong knowledge of MS Word, Excel, or other programming experience
  • Client management experience is preferred.
  • Post-tension concrete experience a plus
  • Member of professional and technical societies

Skills and Competencies:

  • Must be a self-starter with the ability to work with minimal supervision. Willingness to take on additional responsibilities as presented.
  • Strong communication skills are required (verbal and written)
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced team environment, manage multiple projects, tasks, and deadlines, and bring each to completion.
  • Effective in an entrepreneurial culture, working independently and as part of a team
  • Participates in 'fee-based proposal' development or in preparing assigned technical components of RFI responses
