POSITION DESCRIPTION: Senior Strategic Writer
Location: Quantico, VA and Pentagon
Status: Contingent Hire_Full-Time_Hybrid
Clearance: Active Secret Clearance Required
MUST HAVE: Experience supporting a Department of Defense/DoW
Position Summary
The Senior Strategic Writer provides senior-level strategic communications, executive writing, briefing development, and governance support to Department of Defense and Marine Corps organizations. The position develops strategic communications plans, executive-level briefings, presentations, reports, messaging, and other communication products that support senior leader decision-making and organizational priorities.
The Senior Strategic Writer synthesizes complex operational, technical, and strategic information into clear, concise, and compelling communications for senior leaders and diverse audiences. The position also supports governance boards, executive forums, working groups, and other senior-level engagements by developing briefing materials, coordinating inputs, documenting decisions, and tracking follow-up actions.
Required Qualifications
3 U.S. Citizen with an Active Secret security clearance and ability to obtain a CAC card. Valid U.S. passport required.
3 8+ years of experience supporting strategic communications, executive communications, technical or strategic writing, or related DoD activities.
3 Experience supporting a DoD Service, Headquarters-level organization, or comparable senior military staff.
3 Demonstrated experience developing strategic communications plans, executive briefings, presentations, reports, messaging, and senior-leader communication products.
3 Experience supporting executive-level governance boards, decision forums, working groups, or similar senior leadership activities.
3 Ability to research, analyze, and synthesize complex information from multiple sources into clear and concise communications.
3 Strong strategic writing, editing, briefing development, proofreading, research, and analytical skills.
3 Ability to translate complex technical, operational, and strategic information into products appropriate for executive and stakeholder audiences.
3 Ability to coordinate with senior leaders, subject matter experts, action officers, and Government stakeholders.
3 Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and SharePoint.
3 Ability to manage multiple communication products, staffing actions, deadlines, and revisions.
3 Ability to travel as required.
Preferred Qualifications
3 Bachelor3s or Master3s degree in Communications, Journalism, English, Public Relations, Political Science, International Relations, Strategic Studies, or a related field.
3 Previous experience supporting the U.S. Marine Corps, Department of the Navy, Joint Staff, or other DoD Headquarters organization.
3 Experience developing and implementing strategic communications plans at the DoD Service or Headquarters level.
3 Experience developing executive-level presentations, talking points, speeches, information papers, decision briefs, and strategic messaging.
3 Experience supporting senior-level governance boards and executive decision-making processes.
3 Knowledge of military staffing, coordination, strategic planning, and communication processes.
Primary Duties
3 Develop and implement strategic communications plans, communication strategies, messaging, and supporting materials aligned with organizational priorities and senior leader objectives.
3 Design, develop, edit, and coordinate executive-level briefings, presentations, decision briefs, talking points, reports, information papers, and other senior-leader products.
3 Support governance boards, executive forums, working groups, and senior-level meetings by coordinating inputs, developing agendas and briefing materials, documenting decisions, and tracking actions.
3 Research, analyze, and synthesize technical, operational, policy, and strategic information into clear and concise communications.
3 Translate complex information and data into compelling narratives, presentations, visual products, and executive-level messaging.
3 Coordinate communication products with Government personnel, senior leaders, subject matter experts, action officers, and other stakeholders.
3 Gather and integrate stakeholder input while maintaining consistency in organizational messaging, terminology, and strategic themes.
3 Review and edit communication products for accuracy, clarity, consistency, organization, tone, and suitability for the intended audience.
3 Maintain communication products, briefing materials, supporting references, decision records, and document versions throughout staffing and approval processes.
3 Support other strategic communications, executive writing, briefing development, governance, research, and analytical requirements as assigned.
