About the Role

Our Mechanical Engineers are responsible for design of highly complex opto-mechanical and electromechanical components from concept straight through to production. Although our work is driven by specific objectives, goals and defined boundaries, we execute our work under wide guidelines.

Mechanical Engineering at L3HARRIS WESCAM requires the application of advanced engineering experiences requiring specialized knowledge for decidedly complex engineering assignments. Our state-of-the-art electro-optical stabilized imaging systems are renowned globally for their durability, capability and modularity. This is by no accident - our Mechanical Engineers and Computer-Aided Engineers (CAE) are some of the best in the industry and are directly responsible for our success.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Responsible for mechanical design and analysis of complex opto-mechanical and electromechanical products from concept through to production using modern CAD and analysis tools. Assigned projects will be of an advanced nature and will involve solving difficult technical problems.
  • Perform innovation and/or suggest ways to improve our systems and/or reduce cost
  • Carries out complex and difficult engineering assignments requiring specialized engineering knowledge. Requires application of advanced engineering knowledge. Assigned projects and problems make it often necessary to modify established methods and devise new approaches. Is relied upon to complete difficult projects in a timely manner.
  • A major technical contributor or lead to the completion of project goals and objectives.
  • Contributes to the definition of departmental best practices and design approaches.
  • Work is assigned in terms of specific objectives and goals with defined boundaries. Work is carried out within wide guidelines. Technical guidance and review is available as required.
  • Often gives technical or project related guidance and direction to other staff. May act as a lead on larger projects. May provide guidance or mentor staff on complex design practices and development methods. May provide some level of product level ownership.
  • Participate in design reviews as either a presenter or a reviewer.
  • Supporting the verification and validation of new product designs.
  • Keep in synchronization with mechanical industry trends and new technologies that may be relevant to L3 Wescam's present and future product development


Required Capabilities
  • Proficient user of FEA for static and dynamics analysis of complex assemblies, preferably Ansys
  • Proficient user of a CFD (computational fluid dynamics) analysis package, preferably Ansys
  • Advanced knowledge of a 3D CAD system, preferably SolidWorks
  • Experience with MATLAB Simulink, Simscape, or an equivalent mathematical application, applied to multiphysics simulation and/or digital signal processing
  • Extensive knowledge of drawing standards and mechanical design standard practice
  • Well versed in mechanical dynamics and vibration
  • Well versed in strength of materials and classical analysis methods
  • Well versed in opto-mechanical design principles
  • Well versed in machining, casting, sheet metal, and composites manufacturing techniques and processes
  • Well versed in rapid prototyping techniques and methods
  • Well versed in Materials Science
  • Technical Leadership skills
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to prepare detailed technical reports and specifications
  • A highly motivated, self-starter
  • Ability to learn and grow within a fast paced environment
  • Meets the requirements of the Controlled Goods Registration Program and is eligible for a Canadian government security clearance


Desired Education and Experiences
  • Bachelor's Degree and minimum 6 years of prior relevant experience (ideally with 8 years of Mechanical Systems Engineering experience), or Graduate Degree and a minimum of 4 years of prior related experience, or In lieu of a degree, minimum of 10 years of prior related experience.
