The Team:

The BSW (Basic Software) Memory Boot & Programming Services team is a core embedded-software group responsible for the memory, boot, and programming capabilities that enable GM electronic control units (ECUs) to securely receive, store, validate, and update software and calibration content across manufacturing, service, engineering, and over-the-air use cases.

The team develops and integrates boot managers, bootloaders, bootloader updaters, memory and data-management services, programming flows, and related security components, while partnering closely with hardware, application software, vehicle programs, suppliers, manufacturing, and service organizations to deliver reliable, production-ready embedded infrastructure.

The team is part of GM’s Mechatronic Software Platform organization, within Embedded Platform Systems & Infrastructure, whose mission is to provide robust mechatronic software infrastructure that enables customer-facing vehicle features and functions.

The Role:
General Motors is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Software Engineer specializing in Bootloader Development. This role involves leading the design, development, and testing of bootloader software for next-generation automotive systems, ensuring robust and secure embedded solutions.


What You'll Do (Responsibilities):

  • Lead the architectural design and development of bootloader software, adhering to automotive industry standards and best practices.
  • Drive cross-functional collaboration with hardware, software, and systems engineering teams to define requirements, integrate components, and resolve technical challenges.
  • Perform hands-on software coding, debugging, and testing of bootloader components, ensuring high-quality, reliable, and secure solutions.
  • Develop and implement comprehensive test strategies for bootloader software, including unit, integration, and system-level testing.
  • Participate in and contribute to a Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) development environment, embracing agile methodologies and continuous improvement.
  • Contribute to the data architecture development related to bootloader configurations, updates, and diagnostics.
  • Mentor and provide technical guidance to junior engineers on bootloader development and embedded software best practices.
  • Stay current with emerging technologies and industry trends in bootloader development, embedded systems, and automotive software.

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications):

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • 5+ years of experience in embedded software development, with a strong focus on bootloader design and implementation.
  • Proven experience with Cross-Functional Leadership in complex technical projects.
  • Expertise in Software Coding and Software Development, particularly in C/C++ for embedded systems.
  • Strong proficiency in Debugging techniques for embedded hardware and software.
  • Experience with Data Architecture Development in an embedded context.
  • Demonstrated experience with Test methodologies and tools for embedded software.
  • Knowledge of automotive communication protocols (e.g., CAN, Ethernet, LIN) and diagnostic standards (e.g., UDS, DoIP) is highly desirable.

What Will Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)

  • Experience with secure boot implementations, cryptography, and hardware security modules (HSM).
